LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Fire erupted in a vacant building at the end of Oceanside Pier yesterday afternoon.  Thick black smoke was seen before 3p coming from what used to be a Ruby’s Diner.  Brine Box, the seafood kiosk next to the vacant restaurant reported all of its employees were safe and unaffected by the fire, but its structure suffered heavy damage.  City officials say the fire was contained to the far west end of the pier with firefighters tending to hot spots through this morning.  144 firefighters, 30 lifeguards and 32 police officers assisted with the firefighting effort.  The beach and strand areas around the Pier are closed until further notice with debris washing up on the beach. Some businesses in front of the pier will remain closed today and activities at the Junior Seau Beach Recreation Center are cancelled for today.  With the current version having opened in 1987, Oceanside Pier is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/oceanside-fire-department-responds-to-blaze-on-pier

But officials stress that all were associated with the demonstration.  There was no actual emergency at the school. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/every-15-minutes-comes-to-vchs-wednesday-morning/

The current storm passing through Southern California left between a trace and a couple of hundreds of an inch of light rain in most of North County and Southwest Riverside.  Some areas remained dry.  Deer Springs was an exception with 7 hundredths of an inch.  Mesa Grande had 12 hundredths and Santa Ysabel had 15 hundredths.  There’s a small chance of more today.  The traditional May-June gloom sets in a couple of days early beginning Sunday.  The full forecast is coming up. Golden State’s Steph Curry has been named the NBA Clutch Player of the Year.  The 36-year old guard finished with the most clutch points in the league this season – 189, on the team that played more clutch games than any other – 48.  The NBA defines “clutch” as the final five minutes of a game played within a five-point margin.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40025613/warriors-star-stephen-curry-named-clutch-player-year

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost 10-9 to the visiting Rockies yesterday.  The Dodgers edged the Nationals in Washington 2-1.  The Angels had the day off.  Today, the Dodgers are at Toronto.  The Angels host the Twins and the Padres host Philadelphia for the first games of weekend series.

MLB is bringing back its Players Weekend this August for the first time since 2019.  The goal is to reach younger audiences by spotlighting different aspects of players’ lives though in-stadium events, broadcasts and social media.  The first day on August 16 will feature personalities, friendships and off-field interests.  The second day focuses on charitable causes.  Sunday the 18th looks at their paths to the big leagues, including parents and influential mentors. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40023864/mlb-bringing-back-players-weekend-august

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is talking about expanding the regular season to 18 games, playing Super Bowl on President’s Day weekend and increasing the number of international games.  Goodell says that while the current schedule of 17 regular and three pre-season games is fine for now, he’s not a fan of pre-season and would rather see that third game become a regular season game.  That would lengthen the season with a second bye week.  He’d also like to see as many as 16 regular season games being played abroad within the next ten years.  Games will be played in Brazil and Spain for the first time next year. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40031468/roger-goodell-mulls-18-game-slate-president-day-weekend-super-bowl

The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation went up more than expected last month according to figures released today by the Commerce Department.  The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index was 2.7% for the year ended in March – two tenths higher than February and a tenth higher than economists were expecting.  Everything’s a lot better than it was two years ago, but inflation … and expectations for inflation remain stubbornly higher than the Fed’s goal of 2%.  Statistics this week further cloud the future as to whether the Fed will lower or raise interest rates, or leave them alone the rest of this year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/26/economy/pce-inflation-spending-march/index.html

The Department of Homeland Security today announced the creation of a panel including the CEOs of some of the world’s largest companies to discuss how to defend airlines, utilities and critical infrastructure from attacks by artificial intelligence some of them are creating.  The list of 22 members includes the heads of Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, but also defense contractors including Northrop Grumman and air carrier Delta Air Lines.  The panel is designed to help both government and the private sector address both the benefits and risks of AI, for which there is no current targeted federal law. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/26/tech/openai-altman-government-ai-safety-panel/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, two wide releases – both of them having to do with strong women who inspire their families to success.  “Unsung Hero” is a true story of a family from Australia that achieves success in inspirational music in the U.S.  The other is “Challengers”, a sports drama about a tennis player turned coach who turns around her professional tennis player/husband’s career.  About a dozen others, including thrillers “Cash Out” starring John Travolta and Kristin Davis, and “Breathe” starring Jennifer Hudson open in limited release. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/april/2024?view=list

The campus of USC is one of many in turmoil over the Israel-Hamas war.  Pro-Palestinian demonstrations led to the arrest of more than 90 people there yesterday.  Protestors are now demanding “full amnesty” for those in custody.  The campus was closed to outsiders on Wednesday.  That and the backlash over the cancellation last week of a Muslim valedictorian’s speech led the school to cancel commencement ceremonies next month that would normally attract 65k people.  Current security measures can’t process that many people in a short enough amount of time.  Officials will announce updated commencement plans next week.  Cross-town UCLA has had its share of protests which are rampant at universities across the country.  Specific protestor demands vary from school to school, but most center on demands that universities divest from companies linked to Israel or that profit from the war.  Most universities have refused.  Experts say divestment might not have much effect anyway and that protestors should be careful what they ask for.  Somebody else will buy that divested stock and they may be less concerned about the Palestinian issue.  https://ktla.com/news/local-news/usc-cancels-main-graduation-ceremony/ https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/26/business/campus-turmoil-complex/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/26/investing/what-pro-palestinian-protesters-want/index.html

While the weather here has been mild this Spring, it’s anything but that in the Eastern Mediterranean.  Athens, Greece just had its worst dust storm in six years with hot wind from the Sahara Desert bringing orange dust so thick in the air you couldn’t see the Acropolis from most parts of the city.  The winds brought high temperatures as well.  Nearby Cypress hit 103 degrees on Wednesday – the hottest April day ever recorded there.  www.morningbrew.com
