The Poway Unified school board has voted to fire Superintendent Marian Phelphs following an investigation into accusations that she bullied students at Del Norte High School.  The problem began at a softball awards banquet last year with Phelps allegedly retaliating against another student over the amount of applause given her own daughter compared to other players accepting awards. https://www.kpbs.org/news/education/2024/04/30/poway-unified-board-votes-to-terminate-superintendent-following-investigation-of-student-bullying

Three Milwaukee Brewers including manager Pat Murphy and Tampa Bay outfielder Jose Siri all received league suspensions for their parts in a bench-clearing brawl in the 8th inning of last night’s game between the two teams.  Starting pitcher Freddy Peralta is out for five games for intentionally throwing at Siri in the top of the 6th.  Reliever Abner Uribe got six games time-out after he and Siri squared off against each other two innings later when Siri grounded out to first and the two had words.  Siri received a three-game suspension.  Murphy is out for two.  Being a manager, he can’t appeal his suspension.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40064273/four-suspended-roles-brewers-rays-brawl

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained 3 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 lost 3 tenths.  The NASDAQ was down 4 tenths.  Comex gold was up $12.10 to $2,315 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $2.82 to $79.11 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve wrapped up its latest meeting today.  No change for interest rates, which are at a 23-year high.  Fed Recent economic data has put a damper on chances for a rate cut any time soon and raised the possibility of an increase.  Chairman Jerome Powell reassured everyone that any further rate hikes are unlikely.   Just six weeks ago, Powell and his colleagues had planned for three rate cuts this year.  Wall Street is now betting there may only be one, and not until November. https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/markets-federal-reserve-meeting-05-01-24/index.html

Tesla has fired the team that runs its electric vehicle charging business.  Over the past year, virtually every major EV manufacturer has committed to making its vehicles compatible with the Tesla charging standard.  Charging providers including Electrify America and EVgo have also announced they will be making chargers with Tesla-style North American Charging Standard cables.  No one is sure what this action by Tesla means for the future of the NACS standard.   https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/01/business/tesla-ev-charging-layoffs/index.html

The Dave & Busters restaurant and entertainment chain is looking to capitalize on the boom in online gambling.  A new partnership with gaming tech company Lucra could give 5m D&B Loyalty members the ability to make small bets up to $10 on arcade games through the company app.  Lucra insists its product is a skill-based game and never refers to “betting” or “wagering”, allowing it get around gambling regulations.  That means any collaboration with D&B could be up and running in as little as a week.  Dave & Busters has 222 venues in North America with almost 50m visitors a year.  Shares in the company are up more than 50% in the past 12 months. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/01/investing/dave-and-busters-gambling-betting/index.html

Starbucks plans to speed up service and increase the number of promotions following a disappointing first quarter.  Shares dropped 12% in premarket trading today after the quarterly report shows a drop in same-store sales for the first time since the start of the pandemic.  Sales fell 3%.  One year ago, they’d been up 12%.  Global revenue dropped nearly 2%.  Plans for recovery may be off to a rocky start with the chain increasing its prices locally by about 10% last month, coinciding with the fast-food minimum wage increase in California. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/01/business/starbucks-earnings-second-quarter-2024/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is winding down.  One in five Americans have qualified for reduced internet charges over the past two years.  But that monthly credit was more than double for tribal members.  Part of the $75 a month discount for Native Americans disappeared today.  It’ll be gone completely in June unless Congress acts to extend it, which it doesn’t plan to.  The loss of ACP hits especially hard in Indian Country because many reservations are in remote areas already struggling to get reliable broadband.  Much of their infrastructure is about 50 years behind that of urban areas.  A significant portion of the Navajo nation still doesn’t have grid electricity or a public water supply.  Most back-country tribes are also generally non-gaming, so online commerce is a vital part of their economy, especially if members want to live and work on their respective reservations.  It’s also an important component of cultural preservation and keeping Native languages alive.  About 329,500 tribal households are enrolled in ACP.  Its loss means a $900 a year higher internet bill for each of them.  Some see the end of ACP as another stain on the US government’s centuries-long history of broken promises to tribes. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/01/tech/tribes-congress-cuts-acp-internet-subsidy/index.html

Tipping has expanded to just about everything touched by the service industry thanks to apps and electronic checkout with suggested tips often added automatically.  Domino’s is fighting tipping fatigue with a new promotion now through September.  With “You Tip, We Tip”, Domino’s customers get $3 off a future online delivery order for every $3 or more they tip a Domino’s driver.  Marketing experts say it’s a clever way to engage with customers on a societal issue in a humorous way.  An ad for the campaign shows a minister asking for a tip at the end of a wedding ceremony.  It also may grow sales after some consumers pulled back on restaurant purchases as a result of three years of pandemic-induced price increases on everything. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/01/business/dominos-tipping-pizza/index.html
