LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A volunteer at San Marcos United Methodist Church was stung hundreds of times in a bee attack last week.  68-year old Paul Loren was on a tractor, mowing brush to clear space for a community garden when the tractor hit some piping containing a hive.  The bees quickly swarmed Loren, who called out to a 12-year old boy to call 9-1-1.  First responders arrived in less than ten minutes.  Loren was hospitalized for four days, suffering several life-threatening complications.  Professional bee keepers uncovered three hives and removed them from the church property.  They say swarming season was delayed this year in Southern California due to the cold, rainy winter and to carefully inspect areas before mowing or using a weed whacker. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/san-marcos-church-volunteer-stung-hundreds-of-times-in-bee-attack

Investigators have ruled out arson as the cause of last week’s Oceanside Pier fire which gutted a vacant restaurant and adjacent snack shop.  The restaurant had been undergoing renovations at the time.  The historic seafront landmark remains closed to the public pending the installation of temporary fencing to isolate the damaged end of the pier.  The Coast Guard is restricting water access to 100 yards for vessels and 100 feet for swimmers and surfers. https://www.kpbs.org/news/public-safety/2024/04/29/arson-ruled-out-as-cause-of-oceanside-pier-fire

Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco is presenting the county Board of Supervisors today with a request to raise the charge to cities for the use of patrol deputies from $209.30 an hour to $214.47 – increase of almost 2 ½%.  Officials say this hike is needed to recoup higher costs and would be retroactive to last July 1.  There was a 1.67% hike last year to cover increased pension costs among other things.  As the result of a 7% hike in 2015, the city of Menifee opted to set up its own police department in 2020.  Cities that contract with the Sheriff’s Department include Temecula.  www.temeculapatch.com

After three years of decline, California’s population is once again growing.  We had a net increase of just over 67k residents in 2023.  The previous three years of population decline included a Census year, causing the state to lose one Congressional seat.  Gov. Newsom blamed the years of decline on a combination of increased death rate due to Covid, a declining birth rate, and a slowdown in illegal immigration.  His critics note a surge of people leaving the state over high taxes, a growing homeless problem and housing shortage.  There were still over 91k more people moving out of the state compared to those moving in last year.  California continues to be the most populous state and now has just over 39.1m people. https://www.kpbs.org/news/economy/2024/04/30/californias-population-grew-in-2023-halting-3-years-of-decline

In the NBA playoffs – Oklahoma City completed a sweep of its series against the Pelicans in New Orleans last night with a 97-89 win.  Boston now leads Miami three games to one, beating the Heat in Miami 102-88.  The Nuggets eliminated the Lakers four games to one with a 108-106 win last night in Denver.

Tonight, Philly and Indy could wrap up their 1st round series.  The 76ers are at New York, leading three games to one.  Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and Kelly Oubre Jr. both missed yesterday’s shootaround.  Oubre is a probable for tonight’s game, but Embiid is questionable.  The Pacers are at Milwaukee leading three games to one.  And Game 5 is being played in Cleveland with the Cavaliers and the Magic tied at two games apiece in that series.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40056475/76ers-joel-embiid-kelly-oubre-jr-miss-shootaround-ahead-g-5

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost their fifth game in a row and have fallen to third place in the NL West, 5 ½ games behind the first-place Dodgers, who aren’t doing that well so far this season.  They have the second-worst record among the six division leaders.  San Diego lost 5-2 to the visiting Reds yesterday.  The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 8-4 in Phoenix.  It was the first time since 2006 that a complete game was played with no Dodgers striking out.  The Angels edged the visiting Phillies 6-5.  Those series all continue today.

In a memo to the players’ union on Sunday, Major League Baseball said it will make modifications to the new uniforms that have drawn so many complaints this season.  No later than the start of next season, there will be a return to large lettering on the back of jerseys, better matching of gray tops and pants, fixing the pants which have been claimed to be somewhat see-through and more prone to ripping and tearing, and fixing the tendency for the Nike jerseys to collect sweat.  The memo put most of the blame on Nike for fixing something that wasn’t broken.  Nike is midway through a 10-year contract with Major League Baseball.  Neither Nike, nor the Players Association have commented on Sunday’s memo. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40046470/mlb-modify-uniforms-player-complaints-per-memo

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm open a six-game series tonight at San Jose.

In the NHL playoffs – Florida won its 1st round series against Tampa Bay four games to one with a 6-1 rout on home ice last night.  Dallas beat Vegas 4-2, tying that series at two games apiece.  Four games tonight – all of them could be the deciding game in each series.  Boston hosts Toronto.  New York is at Carolina, Colorado at Winnipeg, and Vancouver hosts Nashville.  Boston, New York, Colorado and Vancouver lead each series three games to one.

In Soccer – LAFC is at San Jose on Saturday.  The Galaxy host Seattle on Sunday.

In the NFL – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed tight end Travis Kelce to a two-year contract worth more than $34m with half fully guaranteed for this season and the rest guaranteed on the third day of the 2025 season.  That makes him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40051233/source-chiefs-te-travis-kelce-agree-2-year-extension

Four-time Pro Bowl selection, cornerback Chris Harris announced today that he is retiring after 12 NFL seasons.  The 34-year-old last played in 2022 with New Orleans.  He stayed in shape during his year off, but says since he hasn’t received any interest from other teams this off-season, he hanging up his cleats. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40056822/four-pro-bowl-cb-chris-harris-jr-retires-nfl

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell 1%.  The S&P 500 was off by 9 tenths of a percent.  The NASDAQ was down 1.1%.  Gold traded a whopping $53.60 lower on the Comex at $2,304.10 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 88 cents a barrel to $81.75.

The average price of a home in the U.S. grew in February at the fastest annual pace since November of 2022 … 6.4% according to the latest S&P CoreLogic Case Shiller reports.  Its National Home Price Index increased from a 6% annualized rate in January.  The Case-Shiller 20-city index also increased in January to an annual rate of 7.3%, up from 6.6% in January.  San Diego had the biggest increase at 11.4%.  The slowest-appreciating city on the list was Portland.  Month-to-month, 17 of the cities declined.  Only San Diego and Washington DC have withstood rising interest rates to deliver positive returns.  Existing home sales, which make up the majority of the market, fell sharply in March, according to the National Association of Realtors.  Stubborn inflation is causing a surge in bond yields, which drive mortgage rates higher, making real estate more unaffordable for many. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/30/business/us-home-prices-rose-in-february/index.html

Walmart announced today that it is closing all 51 of its health care centers in six states and ending virtual health care services.  The giant retailer thought it could leverage its massive financial scale and store base to offer convenient, low-cost health services in places that had limited primary care options.  They had focused on underserved communities.  Walmart cited lack of profit because of the “challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs.”  https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/30/business/walmart-closes-health-clinics/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

In spite of tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine and the potential disruption of oil production there, nothing has happened so far.  So, retail gasoline prices at U.S. pumps have stopped rising and even dipped a little recently.  According to the Auto Club, the nationwide average price for regular dropped two cents over the past week to $3.66.  The head analyst at GasBuddy.com says we may have seen the spring peak for gas prices and that, unless something drastic happens, prices should drift downward in the coming weeks. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/30/business/gas-prices-inflation-oil/index.html

Today’s average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $5.31 – down from $5.34 a week ago, but still 20 cents higher than one month ago.  Today’s average in Riverside County is $5.27 – two cents less than a week ago, but 27 cents more than one month ago.  Today’s lowest local price is $4.69 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center.  In Southwest Riverside County, it’s $4.99 at the Costcos in Temecula, Murrieta and Lake Elsinore.  If you’re traveling through Cabazon, Morongo Travel Center is $4.39.  https://www.riversidegasprices.com/Map_Gas_Prices.aspx
