LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Yesterday, May 1, which is also International Workers’ Day, nurses at Tri-City Hospital were one of the groups protesting working conditions.  They conditions, including overly-long shifts are a safety concern and that understaffing is a financial decision being made by the hosptial.  One emergency room nurse says she’s noticed a 35% decrease in ER staffing and that nurses and techs don’t get breaks while working 12 ½ hours straight.  She says fatigue from such a grueling schedule leads to mistakes.  Patients can sometimes wait between eight and 24 hours to get a bed because there aren’t enough nurses to staff those beds.  The California Nurses Association, representing more than 400 Tri-City nurses has been trying to address these problems for the past year.  According to the latest financial audit, Tri-City’s long-term debt was over $70m as of last summer. Tri-City has yet to comment on yesterday’s protests. https://www.kpbs.org/news/health/2024/05/01/tri-city-nurses-say-staffing-shortage-is-jeopardizing-patient-care

In this, the 30th anniversary year for the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, the city council there is thinking about changing management of North County’s hub for arts and culture.  The city owns the Center, but the nonprofit California Center for the Arts Foundation manages it through a board of directors.  Escondido pays a monthly management fee to the foundation plus normal operating costs.  The city also pays for some specific items and contributes some city employee labor.  Utility bills, management fees and insurance for the Center cost the city more than $1.8m annually.  Escondido has been struggling with a structural budget deficit for several years.  City council may put management of the Center for the Arts out to competitive bid to help balance the city budget.  At least it’ll give leaders an idea whether there is a more cost-effective way to manage the Center. https://voiceofsandiego.org/2024/04/23/escondido-arts-center-could-be-getting-new-management/

The FDA has linked an E. coli outbreak in San Diego County to organic walnuts sold here.  12 people in California and Washington have been hospitalized so far.  Hollister, California-based Gibson Farms has recalled Organic Light Halves and Pieces of shelled walnuts as a result.  The nuts were sold in bulk bins at stores throughout the West including Frazier Farms and Jimbo’s locally. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/walnuts-sold-san-diego-area-stores-linked-e-coli-outbreak

No aftershocks yet from the pair of earthquakes less than a mile from each other about 5-6 miles southwest of Corona Tuesday evening and yesterday afternoon.  The stronger of the two, a 4.1 temblor yesterday at 1:49p was felt from the high desert and Simi Valley as far south as San Diego. A few reports came from the Coachella Valley, but in our direction, shaking was only felt inland about as far as Temecula. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40735352/executive

Pala will have high temperatures in the upper 70s today and tomorrow … a little cooler and windy for Cupa Days on Saturday.  A chance of rain overnight for the peon games, then sunny but cool Sunday afternoon.  Back to seasonable weather next week.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – The Celtics finished off the Heat last night in Boston 118-84, winning the Eastern 1st round series four games to one.  Dallas took a three games to two lead in its series with the Clippers with a 123-93 rout last night in LA.  Luke Doncic was high-scorer with 35 points.  Tonight, Indiana and New York could wrap up their 1st round series.  The Pacers host Milwaukee and the Knicks are at Philadelphia.  The Clippers play their do-or-die game Friday in Dallas.

The league says Tyrese Maxey’s spectacular seven-point run in the final 29 seconds of regulation play in Game 5 of the New York-Philadelphia series Monday never should have happened.  According to the NBA’s Last Two Minute Report, Maxey should have been called for traveling on the first of two 3-pointers – the one on which he was fouled by Mitchell Robinson and made the resulting free throw.  Three other calls were deemed incorrect after that point through the end of overtime.  The same thing happened in Game 2 with New York the beneficiary of multiple missed calls in their favor, allowing them a come-from-behind win in that game. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40065721/officials-missed-tyrese-maxey-travel-final-moments

In Major League Baseball – The Padres topped the visiting Reds 6-2, taking two games out of three in the series.  The Dodgers completed a sweep at Arizona with an 8-0 shutout.  Philadelphia swept the Angels with a 2-1 decision yesterday.  All three SoCal teams and Arizona are off today.  Just six games today.  San Francisco is at Boston.  Colorado is at Miami.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gained across the board again today.  The Dow and S&P 500 were each up 7 tenths of a percent.  The NASDAC gained 1.2%.  Gold traded 20 cents lower on the Comex at $2,311 an ounce.  Oil futures were up 10 cents, with West Texas Intermediate Crude trading at $79.10 a barrel.

Meta got a rare “sell” rating today from BNP Paribas.  Their analyst cites the high cost of AI. https://www.marketwatch.com/articles/meta-platforms-stock-sell-ai-603bf8cc?mod=mw_latestnews

Apple’s quarterly report comes out tonight after market close and economists are expecting the worst.  The company has been struggling with growth challenges due to a sales slowdown in China and seemingly-low interest by its customer base in upgrading to the latest iPhone models.  But Apple has managed to beat expectations for the past four quarters. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/02/tech/apple-earnings-second-quarter-2024/index.html

The latest jobs report hits early tomorrow morning.  Not much is expected to change.  There might be a slight softening in the otherwise strong jobs market.  Economists note that the longer interest rates remain high, the more they put a slow squeeze on the economy, which will cause the demand for workers to decline. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/02/economy/us-jobs-report-april-preview/index.html

The Federal Trade Commission today accused Pioneer Natural Resources CEO and founder, Scott Sheffield of conspiring with OPEC to inflate oil prices.  Regulators say Sheffield used WhatsApp conversations, in-person meetings and public statements to try to “align oil production” in his company’s fields in Texas with that of OPEC and OPEC+, which includes Russia.  The FTC complaint says those efforts were to pad Pioneer’s bottom line at the expense of U.S. consumers.  Pioneer is the biggest oil producer in the Permian Basin.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/02/energy/oil-ceo-opec-scott-sheffield/index.html

Following the failure of numerous attempts at reviving Peloton to its pandemic-era glory, CEO Barry McCarthy is leaving that position and the company is cutting 15% of its workforce – about 400 jobs.  Two company executives will be interim co-CEOs while a “comprehensive” search is made for McCarthy’s successor.  Peloton stock is down 90% from its high in 2020 as sales of bikes and treadmills soared when gyms closed during the first year of Covid. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/02/business/peloton-ceo-job-cuts/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The future of electric vehicles is not a smooth road.  Sales of full-electric vehicles in the U.S. have hit some speed bumps.  In Europe, Volkswagen’s pivot away from diesel following a huge emissions scandal and into EVs continues to be successful with orders for the European market doubling in the first quarter of this year compared with one year ago.  But it’s still less than the company anticipated.  VW is Europe’s biggest car maker.  China is full of startups making EVs that are far cheaper than anything US or European manufacturers can build.  But even they’re running into sales resistance – especially in foreign markets.  Chinese EVs are piling up at European ports with up to an 18-month supply sitting unsold in some places.  There are a number of reasons.  Even though many Chinese car makers have come up with worthy products, they have an inferior image – much like Japanese manufacturers did in the 1960s and early 70s.  Their sales infrastructure is still in start-up mode.  And there are tariffs that take away some to most of their price advantage.  But Japan overcame the odds by constantly focusing on reliable, relatively cheap and increasingly stylish products that became a sought-after alternative to gas-guzzling American models at a time of scarce and expensive fuel.  By focusing on the first three factors and leveraging the world’s need for clean-running cars, China could yet succeed as a world power in automotive manufacturing.    https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/30/business/volkswagen-evs-orders-surge-europe/index.html https://asiatimes.com/2024/04/chinas-electric-cars-pile-up-unbought-at-european-ports/

On this day in music history – May 2,

  • 1963, The Beatles had their first #1 hit on the British music charts with “From Me to You”.  It was the first of 11 consecutive British #1 singles by the Fab Four.  Their first U.S. hit single wouldn’t enter the charts for another eight months.
  • One year later, in 1964 the Rolling Stones self-titled debut album began the first of a 12-week run at #1 on the UK charts.  Also on that day the Stones’ first U.S. single, “Not Fade Away” entered the U.S. singles chart at #98.
  • In 1969, Led Zeppelin played the first of two nights at the Pasadena Rose Palace.
  • In 1970, one-hit wonder Norman Greenbaum was at #1 with “Spirit in the Sky”.

  • In 1981, Scotland’s Sheena Easton began the first of two weeks at #1 with “Morning Train”, which had originally been titled “9 to 5” but was changed to avoid confusion with Dolly Parton’s hit by the same name in the same year.
  • In 1992, a little-known British duo sued the Seattle band, Nirvana, claiming they’d been using the name since 1968.  It was settled out of court in the British group’s favor.
  • In 2005, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce got together for the first of four nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall, 36 years after their group, Cream had split up.  It’s said Clapton agreed to the gig at the time because of the failing health of the other two.  Baker survived another 14 years, passing in 2019 at the age of 80.  Bruce passed away in 2014 at age 71.

Born on this day …

  • In 1933, John Leon “Bunk” Gardner from The Mothers of Invention
  • in 1935, Shawnee rock guitarist and vocalist Link Wray, who invented the fuzz guitar sound and popularized “the power chord” with his 1958 hit, “Rumble”.  Wray passed away in 2005 at the age of 76.
  • Welsh pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck is 87.
  • Lyricist Tony Asher, who co-wrote eight Beach Boys songs including “God Only Knows” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is 84.
