In college football – Nearly 15 years after former USC running back Reggie Bush had to give up his Heisman Trophy, he’s getting it back.  In 2010 Bush had been forced to relinquish the prestigious award after an NCAA investigation found that he and his family had received money and gifts from prospective agents while he was playing for SC.  The Heisman Trust made the announcement to return Bush his trophy yesterday because of NCAA rule changes in 2021 that now allow some player compensation.  The 39-year old from Spring Valley is expected to continue his defamation lawsuit against the NCAA over its allegation that he was part of a pay-for-play program while at school.  www.morningbrew.com

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell 1 ¼%.  The S&P 500 was off by almost 9 tenths.  The NASDAQ was down 1.2%.  Gold gained $3 on the Comex at $2,341.40 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 21 cents at $82.60 a barrel.

Today’s report on U.S. Gross Domestic Product showed economic growth slowing to 1.6%.  It had been growing by 4.9% in the third quarter of last year and 3.4% in Q4.  Today’s data also showed inflation accelerating in the first three months of this year.  The annualized GDP chain price jumped from 1.6% to 3.1%. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/25/markets/wall-street-reaction-gdp-report/index.html

Mortgage rates continue to climb, hitting a five-month high today.  In spite of that and a lack of homes for sale, pending home sales rose 3.4% nationwide in March.  They’d been expected to fall by 3 tenths of a percent.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/25/economy/us-pending-home-sales-march/index.html

Stock in Meta plunged 15% today as the company’s earnings reflected the high cost of building the best AI tools moving forward.  While first quarter profit more than doubled year-on-year and revenue was up 27%, the $5b projected for investment in AI and the likely need for even more in the future made investors nervous.  Meta’s projection for capital expenditure has already increased by about 10% for this year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/25/business/boeing-problems-southwest-ends-service-4-airports/index.html

As a result of its report of increased losses in the first quarter, Southwest Airlines today announced it will halt service to four airports – Bellingham in Washington state, Cozumel International in Mexico, Syracuse-Hancock in New York, and George Bush Intercontinental in Houston.  It will continue to serve Houston’s other airport.  In an interview after the announcement, CEO Bob Jordan walked back earlier comments that delayed deliveries of new jets from Boeing figured into today’s cutbacks. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/25/business/boeing-problems-southwest-ends-service-4-airports/index.html

The Federal Communications Commission today voted 3-2 along party lines to ban internet service providers from tampering with the speed their customers receive to browse the web and download files.  It restores the so-called net neutrality rules enacted in 2017 which were rescinded during the Trump administration.  With today’s vote, the FCC reasserted greater regulatory power over broadband and for the first time said it would override any state or local policies that conflict with federal net neutrality rules.  The Commission called it a public safety and national security issue.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/25/tech/net-neutrality-is-back/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Mike Pinder from the Moody Blues passed away yesterday at the age of 82 surrounded by family.  He was the last surviving founding member of the group and was part of their first nine albums, pioneering the use of a unique instrument known as the mellotron – an electro-mechanical keyboard that uses segments of magnetic tape to playback musical notes.  It was invented in the Moody’s home town of Birmingham, England the year before the group formed in 1964. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/mike-pinder-the-moody-blues-keyboardst-founding-member-dead-obit-1235010490/

Venice, Italy today instituted a fee for day-trippers in that city.  It’s a first among tourist destinations.  Other places charge tourists through taxation.  The 5-Euro fee is to help offset costs borne by the city to host millions of tourists each year – the majority of whom only stay for the day, but who only contribute about 20% of the tourist dollars spent in Venice.  The pilot program which runs for 29 peak days between now and July 14 got off to a shaky start with confusion among visitors and residents protesting it as a restriction on freedom of movement and saying it won’t meaningfully address over-tourism.  The most put-upon visitors today were those who’d booked accommodation, but had to prove their exemption from the fee.  By late afternoon, 15,700 people had paid for a ticket.  Venice attracted 3.2m overnight visitors in 2022.  On busy days, it gets 40k day trippers.  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/25/confusion-protests-first-day-venice-tourist-charge
