In the NBA – The Clippers and Lakers both won on Friday.  Yesterday, the Lakers won a high-scoring game against the visiting Pacers 150-145 while the Clippers lost to the 76ers 121-107.   The Clippers fortunes could be turning around with the possible return tonight of Russell Westbrook.  They were the hottest team in the NBA until he went out with a broken hand a few weeks back.  They’ve faltered without him.  The Clippers host Indiana tonight.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell a third of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a little over a tenth.  The NASDAQ was down a small fraction.  Comex gold traded $16.80 higher at $2,176.80 an ounce. Oil was up $1.13 a barrel for West Texas Intermediate Crude futures.

Trump Media & Technology Group announced today its merger with the publicly traded shell company, Digital World Acquisition Corporation is complete and trading for the new company will begin tomorrow.  It’s all supposed to be a billion-dollar windfall for dominant shareholder, Donald Trump.  Among its holdings are social media platform Truth Social.  The new company says in a statement that the move will “reclaim the Internet from Big Tech censors.”  But Truth Social has recently been losing users even faster than X, the company formerly known as Twitter, and experts say the value of the new company is overstated.  Trump Media generated $3.4m of revenue for the first 9 months last year while posting a net loss of $49m.  Whatever its value, there are regulations that would likely prevent Trump from selling or even borrowing against the value of the new stock for months. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/25/investing/trump-media-stock-trading/index.html

As the plane safety crisis continues to rock Boeing, CEO David Calhoun will step down at the end of this year.  Chairman of the Board, Larry Kellner will not stand for re-election.  He’ll be replaced by former Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf.  It’s part of a full management makeover.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/25/business/boeing-ceo-calhoun-leaving/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” had a moderately good opening weekend, selling $45.2m worth of tickets on 4,300 screens.  “Dune: Part Two” remained in second place in its fourth week, earning another $17.6m.  “Kung Fu Panda 4” dropped from first to third place with $16.8m.  “Immaculate” debuted in 4th place on just 2,300 screens.  The week’s other new release, “Late Night With the Devil” opened on 1k screens, earning $2.8m – good for 6th place.  The weekend overall was the 4th best this year for movie attendance.  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2024W12/

Chick-fil-A is ending its “no antibiotics ever” promise.  Instead, it will embrace a new, looser industry standard: “no antibiotics important to human medicine.”  Back in 2014, the nation’s biggest poultry company, Tyson said it would keep antibiotics out of its chickens.  That ended last summer.  Now it’s following the USDA and World Health Organization standard of no chickens that have been fed antibiotics important to the treatment of humans.  The issue isn’t about raising chickens with or without antibiotics.  It’s the constant exposure when those medicines are present in chickens making people increasingly resistant to the antibiotics when they’re needed for human medical treatment.  It’s a balancing act, raising healthy, more marketable chickens and avoiding unnecessary human exposure to antibiotics.  The WHO developed a set of risk assessments for that in 2007.  Chick-fil-A will institute the policy change in the next month or two.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/25/business/chick-fil-a-antibiotics/index.html

On this day in music history – March 25,

  • In 1966, The Beatles took part in the photo shoot for the infamous “butcher cover” photo for the front of their next album, “Yesterday and Today” at Bob Whitaker’s studio in London.  Public reaction to the photo of the four in white coats covered with raw meat and mutilated and butchered dolls was so bad that Capitol Records recalled 750k copies in order to replace the cover at a cost of $250k, wiping out initial profits from the release.  All previous Beatles albums had immediately turned a profit.  The few butcher cover albums that were sold or distributed to disk jockeys and reviewers, and even the ones that were recalled, covered over and re-distributed are now worth a lot of money.
  • In 1967, The Turtles began the first of three weeks at #1 with “Happy Together”, a song that had been rejected by a dozen other acts before being offered to The Turtles.
  • On the same day, The Who and Cream made their U.S. concert debut at 58th Street Theater in New York City as part of a rock & roll revue presented by New York radio disc jockey, Murray the K.
  • In 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono began their week-long bed-in at the presidential suite of The Amsterdam Hilton in Montreal.  They held daily press conferences from their bed and also recorded the hit single, “Give Peace a Chance” in the room.
  • In 1972, “Horse With No Name” by America began the first of three weeks at #1.
  • In 1983, Motown Records celebrated its 25th anniversary with a concert in Pasadena featuring The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Jr. Walker, The Commodores, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and The Jackson 5 … wow, what a show!
  • In 1989, Madonna was at #1 with “Like a Prayer”.  The highly controversial music video was voted “Most Groundbreaking Music Video of All Time” by MTV viewers in 2005
  • In 2000, NSYNC set a new world record by selling one million tickets in one day for their upcoming concert tour, netting them $42m.
  • In 2006, country music legend Buck Owens died.  He pioneered the Bakersfield sound and had 20 #1 hits on the Billboard Country Music charts.
  • In 2009, Dan Seals from England Dan & John Ford Coley died at the age of 61.  He began a solo career in country music after the duo split.  He was the younger brother of Jim Seals from Seals & Crofts.

Born in this day …

  • In 1934, rockabilly singer-songwriter Johnny Burnette who had the 1961 hit, “You’re Sixteen”.
  • In 1938, singer-songwriter and actor Hoyt Axton who wrote songs for Elvis, Three Dog Night, John Denver, Ringo Starr and Glen Campbell.  He played the father in the 80s movie, “Gremlins”.
  • In 1942, Aretha Franklin.
  • In 1947, Sir Elton John
  • In 1966, Guns ‘N’ Roses drummer Frank Ferrer, who’d also been with The Psychedelic Furs
  • Also in 1966, Canadian guitarist and singer Jeff Healy, who you may remember from the movie, “Roadhouse”.
