LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A wrong-way driver caused a three-vehicle accident in San Marcos Sunday evening.  The driver of the blue Honda SUV traveling west in eastbound lanes of South Santa Fe was hospitalized along with a family of three from one of the other vehicles he crashed into head-on.  None of the injuries were life-threatening.  Alcohol may have been a factor.  https://www.10news.com/sports/padres/cease-allows-1-hit-in-7-innings-of-work-as-padres-beat-rockies-3-1-at-coors-field

Money magazine has named Temecula one of its 50 Best Places to Live in the US for 2024.  The publication noted the area’s nearly 50 wineries, children’s museum and outdoor Sunset Market with live music and local food and art, the beauty of the countryside, hot air balloon rides and hiking on the Santa Rosa Plateau.  Sacramento is the only other California city to make the list.  Money called its 50 cities “the blueprint for the future”. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-among-moneys-50-best-places-live

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – All the top seeds won last night. Denver beat the Lakers 101-99 and now lead the Western 1st Round series two games to none.  Same for the Knicks and Cavaliers.  New York beat Philadelphia 104-101 and Cleveland topped Orlando 96-86.  Tonight, it’s Game Two for the Clippers hosting Dallas, Phoenix at Minnesota and Indiana at Milwaukee.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the Rockies in Denver 3-1.  Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease allowed just one hit in his seven innings.  Acquired from the White Sox at the trade deadline, he’s having the best season start in his six major league seasons.  His ERA is now down to 1.82.  Pinch hitter Tyler Wade from Murrieta hit the tie-breaking and eventual game-winning single in the top of the 8th inning.  https://www.10news.com/sports/padres/cease-allows-1-hit-in-7-innings-of-work-as-padres-beat-rockies-3-1-at-coors-field

Baltimore topped the Angels in Anaheim 4-2.  Those series continue today.  The Dodgers open a series today in Washington.  It’s still early in the season, but right now, the Padres are in second place, only a half-game behind the Dodgers in the NL West.  Both teams are barely above .500.  Cleveland has the best record in the Majors so far at 16 and 6 and leads the AL Central by 3 ½ games over Kansas City, whose record is slightly better than the Dodgers.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm play the first of six games at Rancho Cucamonga tonight.

In the NHL playoffs – Toronto tied up its Eastern Round One series at a game apiece, beating the Bruins in Boston 3-2.  Carolina won its second game against the Islanders 5-3.  The Kings opened their series with a 7-4 loss at Edmonton.  Vegas edged the Stars in Dallas 4-3 to take the first game of that series.  Tonight, it’s Game Two for the Rangers hosting the Capitals, Florida hosting Tampa Bay, Winnipeg hosting Colorado, and Vancouver hosting Nashville.  The host teams all have one game to none leads.

In Soccer – LAFC hosts Portland and The Galaxy are at Austin this Saturday.

In the NFL – The New York Jets traded quarterback Zach Wilson to Denver yesterday.  He was their #2 pick in 2021.  Based on that, they only got pennies on the dollar by trading him and a seventh-round pick this week for a sixth-round pick from Denver.  The two teams will split the $5.5m Wilson is due this season. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39998645/jets-trading-qb-zach-wilson-broncos-source-says

In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is Saturday at Houston.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gained across the board again today.  The Dow was up ¾ of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up 1.2%.  The NASDAQ was up more than 1 ½%.  Gold fell $4.50 an ounce to $2,341.90 on the Comex.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.26 to $83.16 a barrel.

In spite of higher interest rates, new home sales increased in March.  Sales nationwide jumped 8.8% last month according to government figures released yesterday.  The actual number of new homes sold was about 5% higher than expected and was the strongest monthly increase since December 2022.  But sales of existing homes, which is the majority of the market, fell 4.3%.  According to the National Association of Realtors, that’s the sharpest drop in more than a year.  That’s due to a combination of high mortgage rates and lack of homes for sale.  The difference in the two sectors is that homebuilders are offering price reductions, mortgage rate buy-downs, paying buyers’ closing costs and other incentives to support the pace of new home sales. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/mentally-stimulating-work-may-reduce-dementia-risk#Does-the-type-of-work-you-do-really-matter?

Even with new labor contracts boosting expenses and electric vehicles still not being profitable, General Motors reported making more money than expected last quarter.  GM says its North American EV business will turn a profit in the second half of this year.  That and strong demand for gasoline-powered vehicles allowed it to raise its earnings forecast for the year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/23/business/gm-earnings/index.html

The Federal Trade Commission says the country’s largest grocery chains are price-gouging by keeping prices artificially high.  The proof is ever-increasing profits.  Revenues in all of 2021 increased 6% more than total costs.  That increase grew to 7% in just the first half of 2023.  Grocers continue to blame supply chain problems, even though regulators say most of those issues have been resolved and companies that have consolidated to cut costs have also taken greater control of their supply chains.  FTC data shows that Amazon, Kroger and Walmart gained market share during and after the pandemic with profits increasing throughout that time.  https://www.publicnewsservice.org/2024-04-22/consumer/ftc-grocers-gouging-consumers-with-food-prices/a89903-1

As much a business story as entertainment, Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Tortured Poets Department” became the most-streamed album ever on its first day, Friday across Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music platforms.  Spotify alone charted 300m streams in the first 12 hours of the first day.  Amazon and Apple confirmed that Swift’s new album broke records on their platforms as well.  Her music had a total of 26.1b Spotify streams worldwide in 2023.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/22/business/taylor-swift-spotify-streaming-record/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

About 600 public officials were on hand for the kickoff to construction of the high-speed all-electric train between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga.  The ceremonial first nail was driven yesterday in Las Vegas.  The line will be operated by Brightline West, whose sister company already operates a similar train line between Miami and Orlando.  The new Las Vegas line will run alongside I-15 at up to 186 miles an hour, arriving in Rancho Cucamonga in about half the time it takes to drive the same route – even without traffic.  Developers say it will take 3m cars off the frequently crowded freeway and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 400k tons annually.  It’ll also support more than 11k jobs.  Three of the four stations along the 218-mile line are in San Bernardino County, bringing billions in revenue to the county.  Beside termination points, the other two stations are in Victor Valley and Hesperia.  The line will also be a major asset for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/04/22/construction-begins-on-high-speed-train-from-las-vegas-to-southern-california/

A study out of Norway says the type of work you do may affect the likelihood you’ll develop cognitive impairment or dementia after age 70.  Researchers scored jobs on a Routine Task Intensity (RTI) scale.  Even jobs that require speed and precision can be repetitive, and therefore less mentally challenging.  Things like factory work, filing and bookkeeping.  They get a high RTI score.  Non-routine tasks require more cognitive involvement.  Such jobs may be more interpersonal with constant worker engagement, coaching or coaxing others.  Examples include computer programming and public relations.  They get a low RTI score.  Office helpers and cleaners are the most common high-RTI jobs.  Those in retail sales are medium-high.  Childcare workers and nurses are the largest category of medium-low RTI jobs.  The most common low-RTI job is primary and secondary education teaching.  Among high RTI group individuals studied, 42% had cognitive impairment at age 70 compared with 27% for the low RTI group.  That’s not to say the jobs themselves cause dementia.  The RTI-scale hypothesis implies a use-it-or-lose-it component.  That means stimulating hobbies or activities and socializing can make up for a lack of mental engagement at work to help lessen mental decline after age 70. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/mentally-stimulating-work-may-reduce-dementia-risk#Does-the-type-of-work-you-do-really-matter?

  • 1956, Elvis Presley with sidemen Scotty Moore and Bill Black played the first night of a two-week engagement at the New Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas.  Though he would come to be closely associated with Las Vegas entertainment in the 60s and 70s, this earlier appearance got a less-than-enthusiastic reception.
  • In 1960, The Nerk Twins performed at The Fox and Hounds pub in Caversham, Berkshire, England.  The twins were actually 19-year old John Lennon and 17-year old Paul McCartney.  The pub belonged to Paul’s cousin and her husband who gave the lads advice, based on his experience as a talent manager.
  • In 1963, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones met for the first time during a Stones performance at the Crawdaddy Club.
  • In 1969, “The Beatles with Billy Preston” single “Get Back” was at #1.  It was the only Beatles song to credit anyone other than the four group members and the first single released in the U.S. in true stereo.
  • In 1971, The Rolling Stones released the album “Sticky Fingers”.  It was their first release on their own label through Atlantic Records and featured cover art designed by Andy Warhol.  The close-up photo of a pair of jeans included a working zipper.
  • In 1976, the Ramones released their first album.
  • In 1977, Thelma Houston hit #1 on the Billboard chart with “Don’t Leave Me This Way”.

  • In 1994, Pink Floyd had their fourth #1 album on the British charts – “The Division Bell”.
  • In 1995, a Liverpool man found a tape in his attic containing 16 of the earliest recordings ever made by the Beatles in 1959.  His father had lent a reel to reel tape recorder to Paul McCartney and the tape had been lost in the attic for 36 years.
