LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The California Department of Education has determined that the Murrieta Valley Unified School District’s policy of notifying parents if their child identifies as transgender is illegal and has ordered the district to not enforce it.  Yesterday’s DOE letter to the district gives them five days to notify staff and students of the department’s decision.  First approved in August, the Murrieta school board voted 3-2 last month to keep the policy, though it has yet to be enforced.  The state DOE letter stems from a March complaint filed by two Murrieta district teachers who call the policy an injustice.  The letter says the school district’s policy for mandatory notification of parents about “sensitive, often private information unique to a class of students with protected characteristics” and not with the consent of the student can harm students’ constitutional rights and protections afforded by state anti-discrimination polices.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/04/11/murrieta-schools-ordered-to-stop-enforcing-transgender-policy

The Riverside County Transportation Commission on Wednesday approved an ambitious $30b Traffic Relief Plan focusing on highways in the southwest part of the county including Temecula, Murrieta, Wildomar, Menifee, and Lake Elsinore.  One third of the money would be directed at highway projects, with public transportation getting one fourth.  Safe streets and roads get 18%.  The 34-member RCTC made up of elected representatives from every city in the county and all five county supervisors will decide this summer how to begin funding the plan’s projects.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/traffic-southwest-riverside-county-plan-aims-fix-it

There was a hit-and-run vehicle versus pedestrian incident on Cool Valley Road in Valley Center Wednesday morning.  At about 7a, a construction flagman was struck by a tan Toyota Corolla, which then fled the scene.  The victim was transported to a local hospital with eventually fatal injuries.  Thanks to help from the community, CHP investigators located and arrested the driver of that car yesterday around 4:30p.  He’s identified as Ruperto Jesus Lopez.  He’s now in Vista jail.  It’s not known whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.  https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/driver-arrested-for-fatal-hit-and-run/

Firefighters responded to a call of a truck on fire in De Luz yesterday morning just after 10a.  The truck had reportedly exploded and caught fire while driving south on De Luz Road near Patton Oak Road.  No injuries reported. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/04/04/news/north-county-fire-extinguishes-raging-truck-fire-in-de-luz/75799.html

A reminder that your income taxes are due Monday.  Residents of Maine, Massachusetts and Washington DC get a one-day extension because Monday is legal holiday there.  Those who live or work in federally-declared disaster areas have an IRS-granted six-month extension.  But if you don’t and are not covered by other fairly rare exceptions, you either need to file your 1040 and state returns by 11:59p Monday or submit Form 4868 to get a six-month extension to file.  A 4868 extension only delays filing your return.  If you owe money, it’s still due Monday. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/12/success/tax-filing-late-past-deadline-pay/index.html

Today begins the first weekend of this year’s Coachella Music and Art Festival at the Polo Grounds in Indio.  Tonight’s headliner is Lana Del Rey.  No Doubt will give their first live performance in almost a decade on Sunday.  Tickets for this weekend are sold out.  Some are still available for next weekend.  Live streaming is available beginning today at 4p on Coachella’s YouTube channel.  For those who attend in person, the desert is being spared this weekend’s forecast of rain west of the mountains.  But it will be very windy there with gusts up to 40 miles an hour tomorrow night. https://www.coachella.com/ https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2024/04/11/watch-coachella-livestream-2024/73291037007/

In Pala, a nice day today with a fair chance of up to a third of an inch or rain tomorrow.  Back to normal Spring weather next week.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

In the NBA – Last night’s winners were Chicago, New York, Utah, Golden State and New Orleans. Thanks to Houston’s loss, the Lakers have clinched the final Western Conference play-in spot.

There’s a full schedule of games tonight and Sunday – the final day of the regular season.  Tonight, the Lakers are at Memphis and the Clippers host Utah.  The top six teams get a play-in bye.  7th place Phoenix along with Sacramento, Golden State and the Lakers are the play-in teams for the West.  In the East, five teams are all within three games of each other, fighting it out for fourth through seventh place with Miami currently in 8th followed by guaranteed play-in teams Chicago and Atlanta.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres, Dodgers and Angels didn’t play yesterday.  Two of the seven scheduled games were postponed.  Among the five games that did happen, Kansas City routed Houston 13-3 including a 9-run first inning.  The Royals now have a 7-game win streak.  An even bigger blowout for the Mets over Atlanta 16-4.  Other winners were Oakland, Philadelphia and Baltimore over Boston in ten innings. Weekend series begin today including the Dodgers hosting the Padres and the Angels at Boston.

Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara surrendered to federal authorities this morning.  He’s accused of stealing more than $16m over two years to pay off gambling debts to an illegal sportsbook. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39929102/shohei-ohtani-ex-interpreter-ippei-mizuhara-custody

The final week of the regular season begins tonight with five games including Anaheim hosting Calgary.  Both teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Only Vegas has yet to clinch or be eliminated in the Pacific division.  St. Louis is still uncertain in the Central.  Detroit’s future has yet to be decided in the Atlantic.  And four teams are still alive but undecided in the Metropolitan – Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia and the New York Islanders. https://www.espn.com/nhl/standings

The minor league San Diego Gulls next game is tonight at Ontario.

In Soccer – LAFC and the Galaxy each have games tomorrow.

In the minors – The San Diego Sockers next game is a 2-game series against Chihuahua beginning on the road the 18th.

In the NFL – Apparently embracing his feminine side, 46-year old Tom Brady says he is once again changing his mind regarding retirement.  After waffling twice before, the star quarterback said he was retiring “for good” in February of 2023.  But in a sports podcast yesterday, he opened the door for a late season return to the field, saying he would pick up the phone if a team called him in the event of an injury to their quarterback.  He’s under an agreement with Raiders owner Mark Davis to become a part-owner of the Las Vegas franchise.  He says he’s not sure if he’d be allowed to play again if his ownership stake in the Raiders is approved by the league. https://www.espn.com/nhl/standings

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gave back yesterday’s gains and more.  The Dow fell 1 ½%.  The S&P 500 was off by 1.7%.  And the broader NASDAQ was down more than 1.8%.  Gold fell also, down $2 an ounce on the Comex to $2,370.70.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.07 to $86.09 a barrel. That’s a six-month high.

Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group are plunging.  The company, which owns Truth Social dropped another 5% this morning.  That’s seven down days out of the past eight.  Shares are now trading below $31.  March 26, when the company went public, the intraday value was $80.  Donald Trump owns a dominant 78.8m share stake in the company.  The stock’s decline has cut his net worth by $2.4b.  Trump Media reported losing $58m in 2023 on revenue of just $4.1m.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/12/business/trump-media-stock-truth-social/index.html

The end of the road may be near for U.S. Steel.  Once the world’s premiere steel-maker and one of the top U.S. companies in any field, shareholders are expected to approve a deal today to sell the company to Japan’s Nippon Steel.  The $14b deal would still have to be approved by the Justice Department and the normally low-profile Committee on Foreign Investments in the US, which includes five Presidential cabinet members and the US Attorney General.  Steel is considered a strategic resource.  President Biden opposes the deal at least in part due to United Steelworkers union opposition to it.  The USW has endorsed Biden for re-election.   But a lot of Republican lawmakers oppose the merger as well.  Shares of US Steel plunged yesterday, closing 23% below Nippon’s $55 a share asking price.  That premium means shareholders almost certainly will vote to merge. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/12/business/us-steel-nippon-steel-deal/index.html
