LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Members of two Assembly committees, tribal leaders including tribal court and law enforcement officials, as well as a national expert on Public Law 280 (PL 280) met in Sacramento this morning for an informational roundtable about a little-understood and controversial federal law affecting public safety on tribal lands.  PL 280, passed in 1953 mandates that six states including California oversee criminal jurisdiction over Native Americans on reservations and withdrew most of the federal government’s responsibility for criminal justice in Indian Country.  Tribal leaders and advocates argue that PL 280 resulted in diminished public safety on tribal lands because of jurisdictional confusion among federal, state and local enforcement and courts, fewer resources and less justice system support. They also note that that Missing and Murdered Indigenous People case numbers in the six PL 280 states tend to be higher than in other states.  California ranks fifth in the nation according to the Sovereign Bodies Institute. A Camp Pendleton Marine whose drunk driving caused the death of a 12-year old boy in Oceanside last summer pleaded guilty yesterday to gross vehicular manslaughter.  21-year old Edward Minot was charged with the 4th of July drunk driving crash that killed Santiago Gaspar and injured two others including Gaspar’s 6-year old brother.  His vehicle was being pursued by Oceanside Police around 11p for having no lights on and failure to yield when it broadsided the Nissan Altima containing the victims at Myers and Surfrider Way.  Minot is expected to be sentenced next month to 13 years and 8 months in state prison.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/camp-pendleton-marine-pleads-guilty-to-killing-12-year-old-boy-in-dui-crash

Advocates are calling for better safety for bicyclists on Coast Highway – one of the most scenic and heavily used bike routes in the county.  Just after midnight Saturday, 48-year old Ryan Currie of Encinitas died after crashing his bicycle in the bike lane on the northbound side of the 101 just south of Cardiff State Beach.  Sheriff’s investigators are still trying to determine what led to the possible hit-and-run.  Someone passing by saw his body and called 911. Investigators say Currie was not wearing a helmet. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/advocates-demand-change-along-coast-highway-101-following-cyclist-death

Nine people were arrested on suspicion of dealing fentanyl in the county during a joint operation between San Diego police and the Department of Homeland Security’s Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team March 1.  The 10-hour operation involved more than 60 officers and investigators.  The operation resulted in over 70 contacts, nine felony arrests, eight misdemeanor arrests and citations, 31 field interviews, and 15 fentanyl outreach contacts. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/17-arrested-during-fentanyl-crackdown-san-diego-county

High temperatures will be in the mid-70s after foggy mornings the next couple of days, then a much cooler weekend with a chance of rain in Pala.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NBA – five games last night.  Jalen Green scored 42 points as his Houston Rockets beat the Wizards in Washington 137-114.  Orlando over the visiting Hornets 112-92.  New Orleans beat the Nets in Brooklyn 104-91.  Dallas over San Antonio 113-107.  And Denver got by the Timberwolves in Minnesota 115-112.  So far, San Antonio, Washington, Portland, and Detroit have all been eliminated from playoff contention.  Only Boston has clinched a playoff spot. https://www.espn.com/nba/standings

In college basketball – Yesterday’s First Four winners were Colorado State and Wagner.  In the NIT, the winners were North Texas, Boston College, Georgia, Ohio State, South Florida, Virginia Tech, Minnesota, Iowa, and Utah.  CIT winners were Tarleton State and Abilene Christian.

In Major League Baseball – The first game of the regular season was played today … at 3a.  The first of two games in the series between San Diego and LA in Seoul, South Korea was won by the Dodgers 5-2.  The Padres scored first in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI single by Xander Bogaerts.  That was quickly answered by LA in the next inning.  DH Manny Machado scored as a result of a double play in the bottom half of the 4th, regaining a 2-1 lead for the Padres.  All the rest of the scoring happened in the top of the 8th capped off by Shohei Ohtani’s first RBI as a Dodger.  A fielding error on the go-ahead run was charged to Padres first baseman Jake Cronenworth when a ball ripped through the webbing of his glove.  Otherwise it would have been an easy double play.  Game 2 of the series is tonight/tomorrow at 3a.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39770646/dodgers-win-cronenworth-glove-failure-2-hits-ohtani

Back in the good ol’ USA, preseason continued with the Angels beating Cincinnati 10-6 yesterday.  They play the Giants today.  Preseason games continue through Tuesday.  The rest of the regular season resumes Thursday including the Padres’ home opener hosting the Giants. The Dodgers will host St. Louis and the Angels begin their season on the road at Baltimore.

In the NHL – A busy night last night with 13 games.  Winners included Boston, Detroit, New Jersey, Winnipeg, Philadelphia, Carolina, Colorado, Nashville, Edmonton, Vancouver, Tampa Bay, the Kings over the visiting Blackhawks 6-2.  And Minnesota shut out the Ducks in Anaheim 4-0.  So far, the Ducks, the Sharks and the Blackhawks have been eliminated from the playoff race.  Nobody has clinched yet.  Boston is expected to be the first.  But that honor could go to Winnipeg, Colorado or Vancouver.  https://www.espn.com/nhl/standings

The minor league San Diego Gulls next game is tonight at San Jose.

In the NFL – The league competition committee yesterday discussed a revamped kickoff similar to what the XFL used in 2020 and 2023.  Basically, it would move the majority of kicking and return teams downfield to minimize high-speed collisions.  The kicker would still kick from the 35-yard line, but the other players would line up on the receiving team’s 40.  At least nine on the opposing team would line up between their 30 and 35.  No one other than the kicker and returner can move until the ball hits the ground or a player inside the landing zone between the goal line and the 20.  Touchbacks would be marked at the 35 and no fair catches would be allowed.  Officials would have to be informed if a team plans an onside kick.  No surprise onside kicks allowed.  The changes are being considered to reverse more than a decade of declining return rates.  If 24 of the 32 team owners approve, the rule could go into effect for just one season. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39771673/nfl-owners-consider-kickoff-change-hip-drop-tackle-ban

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down slightly ahead of news from the latest Federal Reserve meeting.  The Dow was down a small fraction.  The S&P 500 and NASDAQ were each down a tenth of a percent.  Gold traded down $2 on the Comex at $2,161.70 an ounce.  Oil futures were down $1.76 a barrel at $81.71 for the benchmark, West Texas Intermediate Crude.

The Fed met today and held its key interest rate steady.  The question is whether chairman Jerome Powell or any of the other district heads will tip their hand as to when rates will begin to decline.  One former Fed official says two rate cuts this year are more likely than three.  Wall Street is betting the first cut will come this summer. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/economy/what-to-expect-from-the-fed-meeting/index.html

Stock in Chipotle skyrocketed after the company today announced a 50-for-1 split.  The company calls it one of the biggest stock splits in New York Stock Exchange history.  As of yesterday, a share of Chipotle was worth almost $2,800.  Companies often issue stock splits when they believe the price per share is too high for the average investor.  This will be the first stock split in Chipotle’s 30-year history.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/19/business/chiptole-stock-split/index.html

The multibillion-dollar settlement agreed to last Friday by the National Association of Realtors mean homeowners are excited and realtors are worried about the likely end of the standard 6% commission on home sales.  Some industry observers are looking at Britain’s real estate agencies to see what might be next for their U.S. counterparts.  In recent years, there has been a rush of highly competitive, upfront fixed-fee real estate services in the United Kingdom.  One of them, Purplebricks has been in business about ten years and offers sellers a property valuation and listing for free, then charges $1,142 to have an agent conduct property viewing and $888 for a marketing package that includes professional photos.  Traditional agents charge about 1% for the average home which, nationwide in Britain goes for about $362k.  Even though charging less, online agencies still only account for about 5 ½% of homes sold in the UK, and the share declines as the value of the property increases.  Both options are a fraction of typical American commissions.  It’s the mere proliferation of services like Purplebricks that has changed the real estate agency market in the UK, making it much more competitive and transparent. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/business/realtor-settlement-low-commission-uk/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

With no winner last night, the Mega Millions jackpot is expected to be close to one billion dollars for Friday’s drawing.  Tonight’s Powerball jackpot has gotten pretty big as well – just under $700m. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/business/mega-millions-jackpot-friday/index.html
