LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

North County Fire Protection District dedicated its new advanced life-support ambulance April 10 at Fallbrook Fire Station #1.  Fallbrook has had only had three ambulances for decades.  In spite of mutual aid from adjacent communities, a fourth was needed to cut long transport times over the 90-square miles served locally, including the increasingly-crowded I-15.  Add to that, since the cut in services and eventual closure of Fallbrook Hospital, the nearest hospitals are now Temecula Valley, Tri-City in Vista, and Palomar in Escondido.  The advanced ambulance has a long list of specialized tools and supplies beyond that of a regular ambulance.   https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/04/18/news/new-ambulance-now-in-service/75898.html

As reported in the Valley Roadrunner – The Valley Center Fire Protection District board has voted 3-2 to seek a 20-year $3 million loan to pay for installing the temporary fire Station 3 on Cole Grade Road.  There was heated discussion before the split vote, with outgoing director Michael O’Connor—in his last meeting as a director due to his early retirement— saying it was fiscally irresponsible to seek such a loan, which will have an annual payment of $250,000, https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/divided-fire-board-votes-to-borrow-3m-to-fund-station-3/

At Wednesday’s Temecula Planning Commission meeting, plans were unanimously approved to demolish the vacant Claim Jumper Restaurant on Rancho California Road across from the Duck Pond and replace it with two buildings – an Ono Hawaiian BBQ restaurant and a Better Buzz Coffee Roasters.  The project includes drive-through lanes for both businesses.  Only one person spoke in opposition, by letter requesting something more upscale for the high-visibility location.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/plans-approved-prime-spot-rancho-california-ynez-roads

An accident on southbound I-15 at French Valley Parkway yesterday afternoon at 3:14p involving two vehicles snarled early rush hour traffic.  All lanes were blocked for a time with traffic backed up to between Murrieta Hot Springs and California Oaks Roads.  All lanes were reopened by 4:30p.  No word on injuries to occupants of the two vehicles. https://patch.com/california/temecula/plans-approved-prime-spot-rancho-california-ynez-roads

About 500 SDG&E customers in Escondido lost power at 4:41 this morning.  It’s expected to be restored by 3p this afternoon. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

Lots of activities this weekend.  Among them, the annual Cupa Gathering at Warner’s Ranch on San Felipe Road is tomorrow at 10a to offer a prayer to ancestors.

The Fallbrook Avocado Festival is Sunday from 9a to 5p all over downtown Fallbrook with traditional contests and activities, hundreds of vendors, free entertainment, a beer and wine garden.  Details at the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce website.  www.FallbrookChamberOfCommerce.org

The 101st staging of the Ramona Pageant opens this weekend and continues the next two weekends at Ramona Bowl in Hemet.  California’s official outdoor play based on Helen Hunt Jackson’s novel telling the fictional story of two Native American lovers in late-1800s Southern California weaves in references to real conflicts between Natives and settlers 150 years ago.  The website for more information is www.TheRamonaBowl.com .  Tickets are available online from eTix.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival wraps up this weekend at the Indio Polo Grounds.

High temperatures in Pala will warm from the mid-70s today to the mid-80s Sunday, then drop about 20 degrees by Thursday.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NBA – No games yesterday.  The play-ins conclude tonight with Chicago at Miami at 4p on ESPN and Sacramento at New Orleans at 6:30p on TNT.  The winners become the 8th seeds for the East and West conferences in the playoffs, which begin tomorrow.  Among tomorrow’s four games, the Lakers are at Denver at 5:30p on ABC.  On Sunday, the Clippers host Dallas at 12:30p, also on ABC.

Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark is about to sign an eight-figure contract … but not to play basketball.  It’s an endorsement deal with Nike.  Of course, it’s because she plays basketball.  But for that she’s only going to get paid a base rookie salary of $76k a year with the Indiana Fever.  That’s in the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement.  Other women players are equally underpaid compared to men playing for the NBA.  Women get 50% of league revenue, the same as the NBA.  But the women’s league doesn’t make nearly as much as the men’s and it’s “incremental revenue” whose targets grow by 20% annually.  With WNBA revenue failing to hit those targets in 2022, player salaries were only 9.3% of league revenue, according to Bloomberg News.  The players’ union is expected to opt out of the current bargaining agreement next year just as new TV contracts are being negotiated, which is where Caitlin Clark comes in.  She brought record-setting ratings to college basketball and to this year’s draft.  Thanks at least in part to her presence in the WNBA, the current $60m television deal is expected to at least double.  As the saying goes, rising waters lift all ships. www.morningbrew.com

In Major League Baseball – Only four games played yesterday.  Tampa Bay edged the Angels 2-1.  Texas over Detroit 9-7.  Cleveland took Boston 5-4.  And San Francisco shut out Arizona 5-0.  The Marlins against the Cubs in Chicago was rained out.  Today, the Angels open a weekend series in Cincinnati, the Dodgers host the Yankees.  And the Padres host Toronto.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm won 7-6 last night over Visalia.  Game 4 of 6 is tonight in Lake Elsinore.

In the NHL – The regular season ended last night.  The Kings won their final game 5-4 in overtime against the visiting Blackhawks.  Anaheim topped Vegas 4-1.  Other winners were Seattle, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Colorado.  The playoffs begin tomorrow with the New York Islanders at Carolina and Toronto at Boston.  Four more first-round opening games on Sunday.  Vegas and LA’s first games aren’t until Monday.

The minor league San Diego Gulls next game is tomorrow at Coachella Valley.

In Soccer – LAFC’s next game is tomorrow hosting the New York Red Bulls.  The Galaxy hosts San Jose on Sunday.

In the minors – The San Diego Sockers begin a 2-game playoff series against Chihuahua on the road tonight.

In the NFL – This year’s draft begins one week from today.  The Chargers, with the #5 overall pick are calling themselves the team with the top pick, since the four teams ahead of them – Chicago, Washington, New England, and whoever Arizona trades with, if they trade away their pick, are all expected to go for quarterbacks.  At #5, the Chargers will be going for the best-player-available.  LA general manager Joe Hortiz and coach Jim Harbaugh both say, it will take an incredible offer for them to trade away that #5 pick. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39970897/chargers-gm-need-attractive-offer-trade-no-5-pick

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is tonight hosting Vancouver.

In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is Sunday hosting the Utah Warriors.

In Golf – At the RBC Heritage Tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with half the field still on the course, four golfers were tied at 11-under par, with yesterday’s leader, J.T. Poston still on the back nine.  The others, Tom Hoge, Sepp Straka, and Collin Morikawa had all finished their round 2. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – The Grand Prix of Long Beach is Sunday.  NASCAR Cup at Talladega, also on Sunday.

In Local High School sports

Bonsall – baseball at Bayfront Charter at 4p

Great Oak – varsity track & field at the Mt. SAC Relays all day today and tomorrow; boys’ varsity tennis in the league finals at Murrieta Tennis Club at 10:30a today

Carmel at 7p; girls’ lacrosse at Sage Creek at 7p; Tomorrow – baseball against El Camino at 10:30a, JV hosting, varsity away; varsity softball against Mira Mesa at Rancho Bernardo at 11a

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were very mixed.  The Dow was up 2 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down 8 tenths.  The broader NASDAQ was down 1 ¾%.  Gold gained $9 on the Comex to $2,407 an ounce.  Oil futures were up 21 cents to $82.94 for the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude.

Unemployment in San Diego County decreased last month to 4.4%.  It was 4.8% in February.  March’s numbers compare to the unadjusted rate of 5.3% for California and 3.9% nationwide for last month. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/unemployment-decreases-4-4-san-diego-county

Hyundai has become the latest company to pause advertising on X.  The move came one day after an ad for the automaker appeared on the social media platform next to an anti-Semitic and pro-Hitler post.  X claims to have suspended the account that made the post.  But as of this morning, the account was still up with the user writing in its bio, “Twitter forced me to delete my bio because it stated: END JEWISH SUPREMACY” (the quote included all-caps).  The account is under review.  According to X, Hyundai failed to activate Brand Safety settings which would have made sure its ads didn’t run alongside posts that a company might find distasteful. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/18/business/hyundai-pause-advertising-x-antisemitism/index.html

Commercial real estate foreclosures are on the rise – more than double the number at this time last year.  There were 625 of them in March.  187 of those were in California.  That California figure is a 400% jump from the previous year.  Well over $900b worth of commercial real estate loans will mature this year.  About $1.5 trillion in commercial mortgage debt is due by the end of 2025.  But the market is struggling with higher interest rates and declining demand for office space as more companies allow employees to work from home.  Another complication is that most commercial real estate credit comes from small and regional banks, who’ve drastically restricted their lending practices following the recent failures of Silicon Valley Bank and others. https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/commercial-real-estate-foreclosures-jumped-march-trouble-looms

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, six wide releases.  None of them are expected to do huge business.  One is the suspense/horror/thriller “Abigail”.  “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” is a historical World War II drama starring Guy Ritchie and Cary Elwes.  The are a couple of comedies – “Villains Inc.” and “Sasquatch Sunset”.  “Hard Miles” is a coming of age sports film about a coach at a medium security correctional school.  And “Wildfire: The Legend of the Cherokee Ghost Horse” is a family drama made about two years ago starring the late Anne Heche. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/april/2024?view=list

Several movie theater stocks are doing well lately.  Among them, Cinemark, which got an upgrade last week by Wells Fargo to “buy” status.  AMC stock isn’t as popular due to its significant debt and negative equity.  But even it is on the rise and doing much better than last year. Its net rating from 8 analysts is minus-1.  https://www.thestreet.com/memestocks/amc/why-cinemark-stock-got-a-double-upgrade-from-wall-street-but-not-amc-stock

Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department” has been released.  Dedicated fans were up all night downloading the 31 tracks on the new double album.   https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/18/business/economic-sales-new-album-taylor-swift/index.html
