Three people were hospitalized and a man armed with a machete was arrested in a home invasion in Escondido early this morning. Escondido Police said officers were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Camellia Street just after 1:30 a.m. due to a reported break-in.  Victims say they did not know their assailant. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/3-hurt-1-arrested-in-escondido-home-invasion

The US Environmental Protection Agency yesterday imposed strict new limits on so-called “forever” chemicals in public water systems.  The mandate requires a group of chemicals, known as PFAS to be reduced to near-zero levels.  It’s the first-ever national limit on toxic PFAS, which are found in everything from food packaging and cookware to dental floss and firefighting foams.  They’ve leached into almost half of all US water systems including more than a dozen in San Diego County.  Cleaning them up to meet the new standards will be costly and that cost will likely fall on the backs of taxpayers. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/strict-new-limits-water-chemicals-announced-see-san-diego-impacts

About 800 SDG&E customers in the southern part of Fallbrook lost power this morning just before 11:30a.  It’s expected to be restored by 3p. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow fell a third of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up a tenth.  And the NASDAQ was up 6 tenths.  Gold gained $13.50 on the Comex to $2,361.90 an ounce.  Oil futures were down almost a dollar with the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude at $85.29 a barrel.

New Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers released today reveal one more measure by which inflation appears to still be a problem.  The Producer Price Index rose 2.1% for the 12 months ended in March, up from 1.6% in February.  The service sector appears to be most responsible for the increase.  PPI captures average price shifts before they reach consumers, making it a possible predictor of future consumer prices.  While the new figure was slightly less than expected, it’s still an increase and is one more reason the Federal Reserve may delay any interest rate cuts.  Wall Street analysts now think the first one might not be until September.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/11/economy/ppi-us-inflation-march/index.html

There’s more to the troubles of 99 Cents Only than just the couple of years of business challenges and an increase in shoplifting that the company alluded to in making its announcement this week that it was closing all of its 370 stores in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas.  The company went private in 2011 in a $1.6b leveraged buyout and hasn’t been profitable since 2015 as it struggled to compete with Dollar General, Costco and Walmart among others.  While competitors expanded, 99’s high debt load left it unable to invest in improvements to stores, its supply chain or digital strategy.  Its focus on low-margin groceries and stores typically double the size of other dollar-type stores left it at a disadvantage. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/11/business/family-dollar-99-cents-only-closing/index.html

Even though significant progress has been made over the past two years to tame inflation, it doesn’t really help struggling Americans or the way they feel about inflation.  They feel it’s still a problem.  Even if inflation was brought to zero, which economists agree isn’t a good thing either, actual prices we pay are still higher than they were a year or two ago.  According to the Consumer Price Index, since Joe Biden took office three years ago, prices are up 19%.  Housing expense has been a key component, accounting for 60% of the overall annual rise in prices last month.  And things like cancelling student debt could add to inflation.  The Biden administration’s plan to build 2m new housing units would help, but not in time for the election.  Meanwhile, presumed Republican candidate Donald Trump has said he will instate a 10% across the board tariff on imports, a 60% tariff on imports from China – which could touch off a trade war, and a 100% tariff on imported cars, including those made in Mexico where American manufacturers have several factories.  All of it is likely to increase inflation.  That’s why economists at the Tax Foundation say tariffs make consumers poorer and shrink the overall economy. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/11/economy/biden-inflation-plan/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/11/economy/trump-tariffs-trade-jobs-inflation/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The family of O. J. Simpson announced this morning that the former NFL star running back and broadcaster has died at the age of 76.  He’d become a household name during his playing days thanks to product endorsements and TV and movie appearances.  His professional accomplishments were eclipsed by his 1995 trial for the brutal killings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman.  Though acquitted in the criminal trial, a civil trial jury two years later found him liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5m in damages.  He later served nine years in prison for an unrelated sports memorabilia robbery.  He was released in 2017.  https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/oj-simpson-death-news-reaction-04-11-24/index.html

Retail gasoline prices have been slowly but steadily rising lately.  The average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County today is $5.32.  That’s up a penny from yesterday, up ten cents from one week ago, and up 42 cents in the past month.  One year ago, it was 44 cents lower than today.  In Riverside County, today’s average is $5.25 – 47 cents more than both one month ago and one year ago.  The nationwide trend is upward as well, but not as quickly, and today’s nationwide average of $3.64 is only four cents more than one year ago.  Today’s lowest local price is $4.69 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center.  The lowest price in Southwest Riverside County is $4.89 at Murrieta Costco. https://www.riversidegasprices.com/Map_Gas_Prices.aspx

U.S. car buyers have been saying “no” to full-electric vehicles.  Now comes word that sales of Volkswagen EVs in Europe have taken a dive as well.  In the wake of subsidy rollbacks, VW’s EV sales have fallen 24% in the first quarter of this year.  Worldwide, the company’s all-electric sales dropped 3% while sales of its combustion engine vehicles rose 4%.  Elsewhere, data suggests demand for gasoline-engine cars is rising faster than EVs in the UK where the Volkswagen ID and Audi e-Tron are among the most popular electric vehicle models.  Seems like the only place EVs are selling well is China, where numerous entry-level models are available from dozens of start-up companies at around $10k – less than half the price that major European and U.S. companies are able to sell their entry level cars. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/volkswagen-electric-car-sales-plunge-122915038.html
