LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The San Pasqual tribe has purchased Liberty Bell Plaza in Valley Center for a reported $8.5m.  The parcel of currently undeveloped land on Valley Center Road across from McDonald’s and adjacent to Native Oaks Golf Club, which the tribe also owns was to be the site of a new Vons/Albertsons.  A couple of other small adjacent parcels have been purchased by the tribe as well.  The tribe still plans to have a market there, but not a gas station, which would compete with their Verizon Fuel station at Valley Center and Lake Wohlford Roads.  (Valley Roadrunner FB post)

The long-vacant Claim Jumper restaurant across the road from the Temecula Duck Pond is set to be torn down with two new businesses in its place – Ono Hawaiian BBQ and Better Buzz Coffee Roasters.  Claim Jumper closed in 2018.  A resolution for the project is on the agenda for Wednesday’s Temecula Planning Commission meeting at 6p in City Council chambers.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-claim-jumper-restaurant-set-demolition-see-whats-coming

One pedestrian was killed and two others injured yesterday evening in Oceanside.  At about 7:30p, a gray Toyota eastbound on Oceanside Boulevard hit the three who were crossing the roadway about 100 yards west of the College Boulevard intersection.  All three were hospitalized.  The fatally-injured one died at Tri-City Medical Center.  The driver remained at the scene, was not speeding and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  https://patch.com/california/carlsbad/3-pedestrians-struck-1-killed-car-north-county

Santa Fe Avenue.  San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies found a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the stomach.  He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.  At least one suspect fled the scene on foot.  An investigation is ongoing.  The second shooting occurred at 9:06 p.m. near Smilax Road and Mimosa Avenue.  Officials said a male teenager was shot in the chest. He was sent to a local hospital, and is in stable condition. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/sheriff-investigating-back-to-back-shootings-in-vista

This is Tax Day.  Federal and state tax returns are due for residents of our area no later than 11:59p tonight.  You can apply to extend your paperwork filing deadline by six months.  19m filers are expected to do that by submitting a Form 4868.  But any taxes owed are still due tonight.  Residents of declared disaster areas get an automatic six-month extension.  Residents of some other states where today is a legal holiday get until tomorrow to file.  With more than 100m returns already filed, the IRS is expecting tens of millions more today alone.  Two out of three filers are owed money back. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/15/success/tax-day-2023-tax-returns/index.html

In the NBA – The regular season is over.  The Lakers finished with a pair of wins – 123-120 at Memphis on Friday and 124-108 yesterday at New Orleans.  The Clippers lost Friday 110-109 to the Jazz and 116-105 to the Rockets yesterday.  Both games were at Cryto.com Arena.  The Clippers finished the season in fourth place in the Western Conference, six games out of first with a 51 and 31 record.  The Lakers finished 8th at 47 and 35.  Oklahoma City clinched first place on a tie-breaker with Denver.  Both finished at 57 and 25.  In the East, the Celtics ran away with it, finishing with a 64 and 18 record, 14 games ahead of second-place New York.  Only four games separated the next seven teams in the East.

The play-ins begin tomorrow with a rematch of the Lakers and Pelicans’ final regular season game at 4:30p on TNT.  Golden State is at Sacramento at 7p.  The Eastern play-ins begin Wednesday. The winners of games the next two days play each other Friday to decide the two conference 8th seeded teams for the playoffs, which begin Saturday. https://www.espn.com/nba/schedule

In Major League Baseball – The Padres took two out of three from the Dodgers in LA over the weekend, winning 8-7 in 11 innings on Friday, losing 5-2 on Saturday and finishing with a 6-3 win yesterday.  Outfielder Jurickson Profar hit the game-winning double in the 7th inning.  That brings San Diego back up to .500 for the season so far.  The Angels lost two out of three at Boston, winning only the opener in a 7-0 shutout.  Today, San Diego opens at series at Milwaukee.  The Angels are at Tampa Bay.  And the Dodgers host Washington.

It looks like the Coyotes may be heading north a couple hundred miles.  The franchise, which relocated from Winnipeg to Phoenix in 1996 is on the verge of moving to Utah.  Jazz owner, Ryan Smith is acquiring the troubled franchise.  The deal is awaiting the approval of the NHL board of governors.  Though the Coyotes just released photos of a proposed new arena in Phoenix, the team is being sold to a deep-pockets new owner with an arena already available in Salt Lake City.  The move became more likely when news hit that the NHL is preparing two schedules for next season – one with the team playing home games in Phoenix and one playing them in Salt Lake City. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/39940303/nhl-arizona-coyotes-move-utah-new-name-schedule-players-coaches

U.S. retail sales rose in March for the second consecutive month.  It’s been higher 7 of the past 10 months.  Sales were higher for gasoline, online retail and to a lesser extent, at restaurants.  Sales of electronics, clothes and sporting goods fell.  Today’s Commerce Department report adds evidence that the domestic economy remains strong, keeping the Federal Reserve in a wait-and-see mode regarding interest rates. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/15/economy/us-retail-sales-march/index.html

Tesla is cutting 10% of its global staff.  That’s 14k jobs.  The official announcement didn’t mention Tesla sales or the general slowdown of demand for electric vehicles.  It said the cuts were needed for “cost reductions and increasing productivity.”  The number of employees at Tesla had doubled over the past four years. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/15/business/tesla-staff-cut/index.html

Sales of Apple iPhones plunged 10% last quarter, according to market research firm, IDC.  It’s mainly due to lost sales in China where nationalism, a rougher economy and increased competition have hurt Apple.  Samsung had been the top smartphone manufacturer for the past 12 years.  Apple gained the crown for just one quarter last year before handing it back to Samsung.  IDC says sales of Android phones like Samsung are expected to grow at twice the rate of iOS, which is Apple’s operating system. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/15/tech/iphone-sales-plunging/index.html

Bird flu is spreading to cattle for the first time.  Associated Press reports more than two dozen herds in eight states have been infected, just weeks after the nation’s largest egg producer found the virus in its chickens.  The FDA says there is no concern about “risk to consumer health,” or that the outbreak “affects the safety of the interstate commercial milk supply.”  The 26 infected herds of cattle are in Idaho, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and South Dakota.  Officials believe cows were most likely infected by exposure to wild birds, but haven’t ruled out cow-to-cow spread.  The infected animals appear to recover within two weeks.  Two people have been infected so far – a Texas dairy worker who was in close contact with infected cattle.  He developed a mild eye infection and has recovered.  Two years ago, a prison inmate working at killing infected birds at a Colorado poultry farm was diagnosed.  His only symptom was fatigue.  He also recovered.  The FDA says the risk of eggs from infected birds getting to market is low due to inspections and safeguards.  Health officials say there’s no evidence that people can catch the virus if food is pasteurized, otherwise heat treated or properly cooked. https://apnews.com/article/bird-flu-h5n1-food-raw-milk-dairy-9d3a579b9bdb6f4d879b14b153174102
