LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The Temecula Valley Unified School District has settled a lawsuit filed in December by the ACLU over its board president’s practice of ejecting people from public meetings. Joseph Komrosky red-carded people he deemed disruptive, leading to the legal action claiming violation of free speech and state open meeting laws. Under the settlement, Komrosky “may only remove members of the public for conduct that actually disrupts a meeting and not conduct that he decides is merely ‘likely to disrupt’.” The president or another designee must also verbally warn the person and give them the chance to stop disruptive conduct before they are ejected. Yellow and red cards cannot substitute for verbal warnings required by California law. Temecula school board meetings have become lively – even raucous since the election of a conservative majority in 2022. That majority became a 2-2 deadlock on many issues since the resignation of trustee Danny Gonzalez in December. A North County light pollution ordinance has been expanded to include single-family homes in Oceanside. Certain exterior lighting fixture that emit undesirable and not easily filtered light rays into the night sky are now prohibited in order to protect natural resources, preserve and enhance the view of the dark sky and protect wildlife. Eleven confirmed and probable cases of norovirus in San Diego County have been linked to frozen oysters from South Korea. Customers who ate at 100s Seafood Grill Buffet in Mission Valley March 31 and April 1 became sick, with one going to an emergency room. The county is working with the state Department of Public Health to identify other retailers in the region who may have had oysters from the same source. In the NBA – The Lakers won yesterday’s play-in game against New Orleans 110-106 and Sacramento beat Golden State 118-94. The Eastern play-ins are today with Miami at Philadelphia at 4p and Atlanta at Chicago at 6:30p. Both games will be on ESPN. Sacramento plays at New Orleans and the two losing teams tonight play each other Friday in the 8^th seed games. The playoffs begin Saturday with four games including the Lakers at Denver. Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter has been banned from the league after an investigation revealed he had tipped off bettors with confidential information, limited his participation in at least one Raptors game, and bet on NBA games while he was playing in the G league. The league investigation remains open and information is being shared with Department of Justice and the FBI. In Major League Baseball – The Padres topped the Brewers in Milwaukee 6-3. The Dodgers beat the visiting Nationals 6-2 thanks in part to five hits by Mookie Betts. The Angels lost 7-6 in 13 innings at Tampa Bay. That was one of three extra inning games yesterday. In the others, Arizona edged the visiting Cubs 12-11 in ten and Cleveland over Boston 10-7 in eleven innings. Mostly day games today. The Padres and Brewers were in the 6^th inning in a nothing-nothing tie at 11:30a. The Nationals and Dodgers have a noon game. The Angels at Tampa Bay are one of the few night games today at 4p our time.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm won 11-5 last night over Visalia. Game 2 of 6 is tonight at Lake Elsinore.

In the NHL – Yesterday’s schedule finalized the playoffs. Washington eliminated Philadelphia with a 2-1 win over the Flyers. Detroit eliminated Pittsburgh with a 5-4 shootout win at Montreal. Two more days of regular season play including four games tonight and six tomorrow. The playoff schedule has yet to be released.

The minor league San Diego Gulls got shut out 6-0 last night at Colorado. Same two teams play tonight at 6p

In Soccer – LAFC’s next game is Saturday hosting the New York Red Bulls. The Galaxy hosts San Jose on Sunday.

In the minors – The San Diego Sockers next game is a 2-game series against Chihuahua beginning on the road tomorrow.

In the NFL – This year’s draft begins one week from tomorrow.

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is Friday hosting Vancouver.

In Rugby – The San Diego Legion’s next game is Sunday hosting the Utah Warriors.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down. The Dow fell a third of a percent. The S&P 500 was off by 7 tenths of a percent. The NASDAQ was down 1.1%. Gold fell $21 on the Comex to $2,386.80 an ounce. Oil futures plunged almost 3%, or $2.40 a barrel to $82.96 for West Texas Intermediate Crude.

Uri Berliner, the senior editor at NPR who wrote a scathing online piece about his network published in The Free Press has resigned following a five-day suspension without pay. He posted his resignation letter to NPR chief executive Katherine Maher on his X account. Berliner’s suspension had been for criticizing NPR’s coverage of Donald Trump’s collusion with Russia leading up to the 2016 election, the controversial Covid-19 lab leak theory, and the New York Post’s story about Hunter Biden’s laptop. Alaska Airlines has lifted the ground stop of flights it initiated this morning around 7:30a. It only lasted about an hour. Out of what the airline called an abundance of caution, flights were paused due to an issue while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates weight and balance on its flights. Ford is recalling more than 450k compact SUVs and pickup trucks because they might lose power due to a battery issue. The affected models are Ford Bronco Sport SUVs made between 2021 and 2024 and Ford Maverick pickups from 2022 to 2023. Low battery charge in these vehicles could result is a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Notification letters will me mailed May 13. LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

PEN America, a non-profit committed to protecting free expression published a report yesterday that says book bans are increasing in this country. There have been 4k instances of book banning in the first half of the current school year. That’s equal to the total from all of last year. The rise began about three years ago as backlash to the Nicole Hannah-Jones 1619 Project at The New York Times. Conservatives became alarmed that schools were using books to indoctrinate students with critical race theory. Since then, censorship has been fueled by right-wing media and political action committees targeting specific school districts and pressuring administrators to take certain books off library shelves and out of classroom curriculum. Books by women and non-binary authors have been disproportionately targeted, according to PEN America. The movement is most prevalent in the red states of Florida and Texas. PEN reports that there is a growing resistance to the bans. Every major publisher is now supporting a legal case to halt book banning in Iowa. A new report published today in “Nature” says climate change will make you poorer. Researchers at Pottsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research say record-breaking heatwaves and wildfires made worse by climate change will cause a 19% drop in global income over the next 25 years. Even with current climate policies and goals, individuals will ultimately bear some economic burden. But the cost would be far worse without achieving standards set by the Paris Climate Agreement. They say worldwide economic damage while pursuing mitigation measures will be about $6 trillion. Santa Rosa Plateau west of Murrieta has started a Junior Ranger Program with levels matched to three age groups from five to 14. The hands-on interactive program allows participants to explore habitats on the preserve. It’s free and overseen by Junior Ranger co-chair Chris Rios. On this day in music history – April 17,

In 1960, while on tour in England, American rocker Eddie Cochran, known for the hit “Summertime Blues” was killed when his taxi crashed into a lamppost. Gene Vincent and songwriter Sharon Sheeley who were riding with him survived. The cab driver was cited, fined, lost his license and sent to prison for six months.
In 1970, Santana began recording their second album, “Abraxas” in San Francisco. Released in the fall, it went to #1 thanks to its hit singles, “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye, Como Va?”
On the same day, performing at the White House at the invitation of President Richard Nixon, Johnny Cash was asked to perform “Okie From Muskogee”. He declined, since that was not one of his songs. It was Merle Haggard’s. He did perform his own #1 hit, “A Boy Named Sue”.
In 1971, all four Beatles had solo hits on the charts simultaneously. Paul McCartney with “Another Day”, John Lennon with “Power to the People”, George Harrison with “My Sweet Lord”, and Ringo Starr with “It Don’t Come Easy”.
On the same day, Three Dog Night began the first of six weeks at #1 with “Joy to the World”, a song written by Hoyt Axton.
In 1973, the Eagles released their second album, “Desperado” which included the hit, “Tequilla Sunrise”.
On the same day, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” album was certified gold. It went on to stay on the Billboard album chart for more than 14 years – the longest charting album of all time.
In 1974, guitarist for Sha Na Na, Vinnie Taylor was found dead in a Charlottesville hotel room from a drug overdose. The novelty act had achieved fame through its appearance at Woodstock, later gaining their own TV show and appearing in the movie Grease as Johnny Casino & The Gamblers.
In 1975, Elvis Presley bought a former Delta jetliner he re-christened the Lisa Marie after his daughter. After paying $250k for it, he spent another $600k customizing it with personal quarters, a meeting area and a dance floor.
In 1981, Vangelis was at #1 with the theme from the movie, “Chariots of Fire”.
In 1983, record producer and bass player with Mountain, Felix Pappalardi was shot and killed by his wife during a jealous rage. The 43-year old had also produced the Cream albums “Disraeli Gears” and “Wheels of Fire”.
In 1987, reggae drummer Carlton Barrett from The Wailers was shot outside his home in Jamaica. He’d originated the one-drop style of percussion and wrote The Wailers hit song, “War”.
In 1991, in Seattle, Nirvana performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” live for the first time.
In 2009, Morrissey walked off the stage at the Coachella Music Festival declaring he could “smell burning flesh”. The committed vegetarian took offense at nearby barbecues. Paul McCartney, The Killers, and The Cure also performed at Coachella that year.

In 1934, music publisher, agent and songwriter Don Kirshner who launched the careers of Neil Diamond, Bobby Darin, Carole King, and Neil Sedaka. He was hired by the creators of the TV show, The Monkees to come up with the hit songs for the show, and created the popular Rock Concert series for late night weekend TV.
In 1943, Roy Estrada, bass player for Frank Zappa’s group The Mothers of Invention and founding member of Little Feat.
