A police chase last night in Vista led to the eventual arrest of three minors suspected of breaking into multiple vehicles in that city.  A Sheriff’s SUV was struck by the fleeing pickup truck near Hillside Terrace during the getaway.  About 15 minutes later, deputies were called to an apartment complex about a mile away on a report of three juveniles bleeding behind the complex.  The truck was discovered abandoned and the minors’ injuries were non-life threatening. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/3-suspected-in-vista-vehicle-break-ins-arrested-after-chase

A fatal hit-and-run bicycle accident on Highway 76 near Singh Way in Oceanside a week ago Sunday is raising concerns about bicycle safety on that road.  The driver of the white or silver Kia Optima that killed Tracey Gross has yet to be found.  There were at least eight cyclists severely injured along the designated bike route from 2017 to 2022.  The California Department of Transportation says it is working on a rehabilitation project to improve bike safety on 76 including possible changes to the bike route.  Work will begin in 2026. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/hit-and-run-raises-safety-concerns-for-bicyclists-on-state-route-76

SPORTS

In the NBA – The Clippers kept it close through the first half, but Indiana pulled away from there on, beating the hapless Clippers in LA last night 133-116.  The Clippers have lost their past two games and are 4 and 6 over their last ten.  They’ve fallen into a tie with New Orleans for fourth place in the Western Conference.  Meanwhile, Denver continues to win.  They’re 9 and 1 with a four-game win streak and are solidly in first place.  They beat Memphis 128-103 last night.  Memphis is out of the playoff race.  Yesterday’s other winners included Cleveland, Atlanta, New York, Brooklyn, Washington, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Sacramento.

Four games tonight including the Lakers at Milwaukee.

In college basketball – It’s the lull between the Second Round and the Sweet 16.  Yesterday’s CBI and CIT game winners were High Point, Arkansas State, Fairfield, Seattle, and Purdue Fort Wayne.  Today, High Point plays Arkansas State and Seattle plays Fairfield in the semifinals at Daytona Beach.  NIT quarterfinal games today are Georgia against Ohio State and Cincinnati against Indiana State.

The Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament begins Thursday with all 16 teams playing including top-seeded UConn against San Diego State.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost to Seattle in this year’s first game at Petco Park.  Fortunately, it’s still a preseason game.  The Angels shut out the Dodgers 6-0 at Dodger Stadium.  Same two matchups today with the freeway series moving to Anaheim.

In a 12-minute statement to the media yesterday, Dodger star Shohei Ohtani told over 70 reporters on hand that he has never gambled on sports and did not instruct his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara to wire money from his account to pay a bookmaker.  He said he knew nothing about it until a few days ago and he was sad and shocked that someone he trusted had done such a thing and lied to him about it.  He has known Mizuhara since the two played baseball together as teens.  No cameras were allowed at the conference and Ohtani did not take follow-up questions.  Ohtani is expected to continue playing while the league investigation unfolds. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39808874/ohtani-adamant-never-betting-sports-says-interpreter-stole-money

In the NHL – Just two games last night. The Kings edged the Canucks in Vancouver 3-2.  And Vegas beat the Blues in St. Louis 2-1 in overtime.  Eleven games tonight.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks had modest gains across the board.  The Dow and S&P were each up a quarter percent.  The NASADQ was up 3 tenths.  Gold gained $1.30 on the Comex, trading at $2,177.70 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 11 cents at $81.84 a barrel.

Last night’s crash of a cargo container ship outbound for Sri Lanka, collapsing the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is having repercussions throughout the business world.  Stock in shipping giant Maersk took a hit.  Baltimore is the leading East Coast port for vehicle imports.  Most if not all shipping will have to be diverted to other ports. Transportation Secretary Buttigieg has promised quick release of federal funds to Baltimore.  Two people were pulled from the water Search and rescue operations continued this morning for six other people missing in the collapse of the bridge which carried Interstate 695.  Despite last-minute warnings, several vehicles were known to have been on the bridge at the time of the accident. https://www.the-sun.com/news/10887766/maryland-francis-scott-key-bridge-collapses/

McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme have announced a partnership for three types of Krispy Kreme donuts to go on sale at McDonald’s restaurants starting later this year.  Earlier this year, Wendy’s teamed with Cinnabon in a similar partnership.  Industry experts say such moves open up brand expansion possibilities, but risk weakening the brand names of both parties.  Krispy Kreme shares jumped 18% this morning.  McDonald’s shares fell two tenths of a percent. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/26/business/krispy-kreme-mcdonalds/index.html

A federal judge in Northern California ruled against social media platform, X this week for trying to squelch posts by the online watchdog group Center for Countering Digital Hate.  District Judge Charles Breyer called X’s lawsuit against CCDH an attempt to silence the group for sounding alarms about hate speech on the platform.  His ruling said the lawsuit was “unabashedly” about “punishing” CCDH for its revealing reports and that those reports were “unquestionably” protected by free speech rights.  The ruling opens a path for other research groups and critics to question the owner of X, Elon Musk, who restored the accounts of white supremacists and spreaders of misinformation under the guise of free speech after he took over the platform formerly known as Twitter. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/26/tech/judges-stern-rebuke-of-elon-musks-x-gives-researchers-fresh-hope/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments today in a case involving the abortion pill mifepristone that could not only limit women’s access to it, but also affect the Food and Drug Administration’s power to regulate any drug.  The case originated by a group of anti-abortion doctors challenges FDA moves in 2016 and 2021 that expanded access to the abortion pill, extending the time it can be used from seven to ten weeks into pregnancy, and making it legal to send by mail, thus extending its availability into states that now outlaw abortion.  The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in August, saying that the FDA did not follow procedures and failed to ensure the medication could be safely administered at home.  SCOTUS is now considering whether to uphold or overrule that August decision.  Two thirds of all abortions through the U.S. health system are through medication.  A study this week said the number of women obtaining abortion pills from sources other than the U.S. health system quadrupled in the six months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.  Upholding the Circuit Court ruling would limit access to mifepristone and could undermine the FDA’s authority to regulate any medicine, which would limit drug makers’ ability to raise funding to develop new treatments due to uncertainty over eventual approval. www.NYTimes.com
