LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A 24-year old man accused of firing shots in a Santa Ysabel gas station Tuesday evening was arrested after struggling with deputies, who used several types of force against him including beanbag rounds, a stun gun and a police dog. The shooting was first reported at the Ramco Petroleum station on Highway 78 near the intersection with Highway 79 at 8:45p.  The man had reportedly fired shots inside the store, headed outside and fired a few more shots at the store.  Deputies arrived to find the clerk had locked the gunman outside the store.  He was still in custody in lieu of $100k bond as of late yesterday. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/story/2024-03-20/man-arrested-accused-of-firing-gun-inside-store-at-santa-ysabel-gas-station

San Diego County today unveiled a new online public records request website.  The site allows you to research what department might have what you’re looking for, submit public records requests, track their progress and even see if records are already available because somebody else requested them.  It’s overseen by the County Clerk at the Board of Supervisors office.  Here’s the link.     https://www.countynewscenter.com/county-opens-new-online-public-records-request-center/

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria today announced the appointment of Scott Wahl as the new chief of the San Diego Police Department.  He replaces David Nesleit, who will retire in June after 36 years of service.  Wahl is a 25-year veteran of the department. https://www.kpbs.org/news/public-safety/2024/03/21/san-diego-mayor-appoints-scott-wahl-as-sdpd-chief

With election results from earlier this month still being finalized, it appears Proposition 1 has narrowly passed.  The measure gives the state greater control over funds raised by a voter-approved tax on income over $1m enacted in 2004.  Counties will be required to spend more on housing and programs for those without a place to live and serious mental illness or substance abuse problems.  Opponents of the measure had warned the changes would be wasteful and end up cutting back programs that keep people from becoming homeless in the first place. https://timesofsandiego.com/politics/2024/03/20/california-voters-narrowly-pass-prop-1-which-aims-to-shore-up-treatment-for-mental-illness/

Full passenger train service is scheduled to resume Monday on the coastal rail tracks through San Clemente.  They’ve been either fully closed or restricted since a landslide in January. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani appears to have been the victim of a pickpocket … and he has big pockets to pick.  His longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara was fired yesterday for allegedly stealing up to $4m to place bets with an illegal online sports betting site.  A spokesman had initially reported that Ohtani was covering the gambling debts of his longtime friend and interpreter.  Ohtani’s lawyers changed that story yesterday, revealing that he’d been the victim of massive theft and that the matter was being turned over to authorities.  It’s unclear exactly how Mizuhara allegedly stole the money. The league has yet to comment on the situation. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/20/sport/shohei-ohtani-interpreter-fired/index.html

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained almost 9 tenths of a percent.  The S&P was up 6 tenths.  The NASDAQ gained ¾ of a percent.  Comex gold traded $20 higher at $2,181 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 60 cents at $80.67 a barrel.

Part of yesterday and today is yesterday’s euphoria on Wall Street is the indication by the Federal Reserve that there would likely be three interest rate cuts this year.  Economists were beginning to think there would only be two.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/investing/stocks-dow-40000-rally-markets-fed/index.html

Reddit today rolled out its initial public stock offering at $34 a share.  That gave the company a $6.5b valuation.  But shares opened 38% higher at the start of trading, putting the value of the social media platform at nearly $9b. https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/reddit-set-hotly-anticipated-debut-after-pricing-ipo-top-range-2024-03-21/

The Justice Department and more than a dozen states today filed a huge antitrust lawsuit against Apple, claiming it is illegally monopolizing the smartphone market.  The suit has been a long time coming following years of allegations by critics that Apple harmed competition with restrictive app store terms, high fees and a “walled-garden” approach to its proprietary hardware and software.  Apple gives its own products better access and features than its competitors.  The DOJ wants courts to order Apple to end restrictions preventing other messaging apps, smartwatches, digital wallets and other technologies from integrating with iPhones.  It also wants Apple to stop using its app store to block innovative new apps.  California is one of the states participating in the suit.  Shares of Apple are down almost 4% today. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/business/boeing-crisis-vacation-ticket-prices/index.html

The crisis at Boeing means more than just declining share values for investors.  It could hit travelers in the wallet.  Until Boeing gets its production problems straightened out, it won’t be selling, building or delivering nearly as many planes as expected.  Demand for airline travel is red-hot right now.  Southwest Airlines, which only flies Boeing 737s announced last week that Boeing would deliver 40% fewer jets than had been expected this year.  Boeing’s only real competition, Airbus is having its own problems.  About 600 Airbus jets worldwide were grounded recently due to an issue with engines made by Pratt & Whitney.  It’s now also dealing with extensive production backlogs.  According to the UK aerospace industry association ADS, the global order backlog for commercial aircraft is over 15,700.  Besides, it’s not that easy for airlines to change manufacturers.  It takes years of lead time.  Constrained supply and high demand means higher prices. Data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation shows air fares were already 5-6% higher this February than one year earlier.  Experts say it’s likely the cost of flying will increase an average of another 10% this summer.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/business/boeing-crisis-vacation-ticket-prices/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Is everybody happy?  Not so much.  In this year’s list of the world’s happiest countries, the U.S. dropped to #23 from #15 last year.  It’s the first time we haven’t been in the Top 20 since the Gallup organization began the list in 2012.  Much of America’s ennui is due to those under 30 feeling worse about their lives.  The happiest, although also one of the coldest places … Finland is once again #1 on the list. www.morningbrew.com

Character actor, M. Emmet Walsh died Tuesday of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Vermont near where he grew up.  You’ve seen him in more than 100 movies including “Blade Runner”, “Raising Arizona”, “Brubaker”, “Slapshot”, and most recently, “Knives Out”.  He did numerous guest spots on hundreds of TV productions as well.  Walsh was 88.  https://www.etonline.com/m-emmet-walsh-blade-runner-and-knives-out-actor-dead-at-88-222071

President Biden is pivoting away from his “if you build them, they will come” Field of Dreams philosophy regarding electric vehicles.  While EV sales continue to increase each year, they’re not booming the way the industry or the Biden administration had hoped.  Consumers, so far are rejecting pure EVs that were at the heart of the administration’s climate agenda.  According to Kelly Blue Book, just 7.6% of new car sales last year were fully electric.  So, the President reorganized his EV bet yesterday by releasing new, stringent tailpipe emissions rules limiting how much carbon dioxide and other pollutants cars and trucks can produce beginning with the 2027 model year.  That backs up pledges to clean up the air by putting more of the burden on hybrid powered vehicles, while moving away from the initial goal of doing it by requiring 60% of all new-vehicle sales to be fully electric by the end of this decade.  The new rules make automakers happy and respect the market’s decision that full-EVs are not ready for prime time.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/business/biden-electric-cars-nightcap/index.html
