LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Two women were shot yesterday in Hemet – one fatally, and the killer is still on the loose.  The incident was reported just before 5p in the 1300 block of W. Fruitvale Avenue.  Both victims were taken to a hospital where one died.  Police are asking for public help in the investigation.  Either call investigators at 951 765 2426 or use the Hemet Police smartphone app to give information anonymously. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/03/26/2-women-shot-1-fatally-in-hemet-killer-is-on-the-loose/

A passenger was killed and the driver hospitalized following a rollover crash just after midnight last night on San Pasqual Valley Road east of Escondido.  An eastbound Chevy pickup missed a curve and went down a 50-foot embankment.  An unidentified 47-year old man was killed.  The 25-year old driver was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/passenger-ejected-killed-in-escondido-rollover-crash

Murrieta Police have been using Lego heads and emojis to cover the faces of suspects on social media sites to comply with a January 1 law that limits law enforcement from sharing mugshots in social media.  But their altered photos finally went viral last week, leading Lego to request the agency stop using its iconic toy pieces in published mugshots.  All across the country, law enforcement agencies have been posting galleries of photos for “Mugshot Mondays” and “Wanted Wednesdays” to gain community engagement.  But publicly identifying suspects in cases yet to go to trial can give them a presumption of guilt, which led to the new law.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/03/26/lego-head-mugshots-add-to-californias-debate-on-policing-and-privacy/

In the NBA – Trailing until less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Lakers rallied to tie and send last night’s game at Milwaukee to overtime.  It ended with a 128-124 Laker win in double OT.  That’s four straight wins for LA, who are still 11 games off the Western Conference pace set by Denver.  Anthony Davis was high-scorer with 34 points.  Golden State over Miami 113-92 to maintain their final playoff position 2 ½ games behind the Lakers.  Oklahoma City beat the Pelicans in New Orleans 119-112.  And Dallas routed Sacramento 132-96.  Twelve games tonight including the Lakers at Memphis and the Clippers at Philadelphia.

Contrary to previous league policy, the NBA will play two games on Christmas Day in the upcoming season.  That falls on a Wednesday this year. www.morningbrew.com

In college basketball – Georgia and Indiana State won yesterday’s NIT quarterfinal games.  College Basketball Invitational tournament semi-finals were won by High Point and Seattle.  They meet today in Daytona Beach in the championship game.  Later this afternoon, it’s the CIT championship game between Purdue Fort Wayne and Norfolk State as well as the NIT quarterfinals for UNLV against Seton Hall and VCU against Utah.  The NCAA Sweet 16 round begins tomorrow including San Diego State’s game against #1 seed Connecticut.  And that why they call it March Madness.

In Major League Baseball – Yesterday was the final day of exhibition games.  Seattle completed its two-game sweep of the Padres at Petco Park with a 7-6 decision.  The Angels and Dodgers finished their series with the Angels winning 4-3 yesterday.  No games today.  The regular season begins tomorrow for everyone except the Dodgers and Padres, who played two regular season games in South Korea last week.  The Padres host the Giants at 1p.  The Dodgers host St. Louis.  And the Angels are at Baltimore.

Private equity billionaire David Rubenstein received unanimous approval by Major League Baseball owners to become the new owner of the Baltimore Orioles.  He takes control just two months after agreeing to buy a majority stake in the team from the Angelos family for $1.725b.  He’ll eventually own 70%.  Among his investment group are former Oriole and Hall of Famer Cal Ripkin Jr., former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and others.  Rubenstein grew up in Baltimore and is a lifelong Orioles fan. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39820434/david-rubenstein-unanimously-approved-new-orioles-owner

In the NHL – Last night’s winners included Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, New Jersey, Nashville, Edmonton, Chicago, Montreal, Arizona, Seattle, Dallas and the New York Rangers, who are now this year’s first team to clinch a playoff spot.  They beat Philadelphia 6-5 in overtime and lead the Metropolitan division and the league with 100 points.  Boston and Dallas lead the Atlantic and Central with 99 points each.  Vancouver leads the Pacific with 98.  The LA Kings trail by 12 points in third place.  The Anaheim Ducks have been eliminated.  They’re in 8th place with 52 points. https://www.espn.com/nhl/standings

The minor league San Diego Gulls next game is tonight hosting Bakersfield at Pechanga Arena.

In the NFL – More league games will be moving to streaming-only in the upcoming season.  Both Peacock and Prime Video will have the exclusive rights to stream games in addition to the Thursday night games that were carried only on those platforms last year.  The first will be the Week 1 game in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday, September 6, streamed exclusively on Peacock.  It is not only the first NFL regular season game in South America, it will also be the first Friday night game on opening weekend in over 50 years.  The designated team is the Philadelphia Eagles.  Their opponent has yet to be announced.  Prime Video will stream a wild-card game next season – the second time a playoff game has been exclusively available via a streaming service.  Last season’s wild-card game between Miami and Kansas City on Peacock was the first.  In accordance with NFL policy, both games will be available for free on regular over-the-air television in the local markets of the competing teams and on mobile devices with NFL+.  https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/nfl-announces-two-exclusive-streaming-games-for-2024-season?utm_term=158A56E1-30C6-4421-A20D-A0667AF40073&utm_medium=email&utm_content=33154FBC-B8CA-4C09-83C3-5B2C5177EA2F&utm_source=SmartBrief

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 7 tenths of a percent.  The S&P was up a third of a percent.  And the NASDAQ was up a tenth.  Comex gold was up $15.10 an ounce to $2,214.30.  Oil futures were down 36 cents to $81.26 a barrel for West Texas Intermediate Crude.

Trading in shares of California-based Fisker Automotive were halted Monday.  The New York Stock Exchange announced it planned to delist the electric vehicle company’s stock to due to “abnormally low” price levels.  Fisker stock sold for $28 a share three years ago.  It’s now less than 10 cents per share.  The company had warned in its March earnings report that it might not have enough cash to survive the year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/25/cars/fisker-shares-halted-ev-company-uncertain-future/index.html

After almost two decades of legal wrangling, Visa and Mastercard have agreed to a $30b deal that will very slightly reduce the 2% fee charged to retailers every time one of their cards is swiped.  Retailers will also be able to adjust prices at checkout depending on the type of card used by the consumer.  Cards with high rewards features are the most likely to be affected.  The biggest effect will be to the banks that issue the cards since they receive most of the revenue from swipe fees.  The settlement is the result of a 2005 lawsuit and only applies to U.S. merchants.  It still needs New York District Court approval and could go to appeals. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/26/economy/visa-mastercard-swipe-fee-settlement/index.html

The Federal Trade Commission has found that major grocery chains exploited pandemic-era supply chain disruptions to squelch competition and protect their profits during the pandemic.  They found that some large companies “accelerated and distorted” the effects of supply chain problems by pressuring suppliers to favor them over smaller competitors … or else.  The FTC points to major food and beverage retailers posting record profits during the pandemic as proof of its allegations.  However, those same retailers say the profits were decause of increased business due to less consumer spending at closed restaurants and strong stocking-up just in case behavior. www.pe.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Software vendors including Microsoft have increasingly been moving towards subscription business models for years.  Now, HP wants to do the same for printing.  Printers have been a sore spot for consumers ever since personal computing became a thing.  Ink cartridges are expensive, often proprietary and some companies even obsolete their own equipment with questionable firmware or replacement print heads and ink cartridges from other sources.  In a federal class action lawsuit, HP is accused of unfairly forcing customers to buy first-party ink after locking down printers that were formerly compatible with third-party cartridges before HP software updates.  HP’s CEO stated to PCWorld that the company’s long-term objective is to make printing a subscription, where you deal only with HP.  It’s claimed to be more convenient and sustainable.  But it’ll undoubtedly be more expensive for consumers. https://www.pcworld.com/article/2216875/hp-ceo-says-the-quiet-part-out-loud-make-printing-a-subscription.html

On this day in music history – March 27,

  • In 1965, The Supremes scored their fourth #1 single with “Stop! In the Name of Love” from their sixth album, “More Hits by The Supremes”.  The song was nominated for the 1966 Grammy for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance, losing to the Statler Brothers’ “Flowers on the Wall”.
  • In 1967, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were awarded the Ivor Novello award for “Michelle”, the most performed song of 1966 in Britain
  • In 1971, WNBC in New York City banned the Brewer & Shipley song “One Toke Over the Line” for its alleged drug reference.  Other stations followed suit.  The label said the “toke” that caused the controversy was short for token, as in train token.  Hence the line “Waitin’ outside at the railway station.  One toke over the line”.  At least that was the excuse.  Many groups were trying to work drug double entendre into their songs in the early 70’s.
  • On the same day, Bruce Springsteen & Friendly Enemies opened for The Allman Brothers at a venue in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  Tickets were $4 … to see The Allman Brothers AND Bruce Springsteen. Gotta love the 70s.
  • In 1972, Elvis Presley recorded his last major hit, “Burnin’ Love” which peaked at #2.
  • In 1979, Eric Clapton married George Harrison’s ex, Pattie Boyd Harrison.  She’d been the inspiration for his hit, “Layla” while married to Harrison.
  • In 1987, U2 performed on the roof of a store in downtown LA to make the video for “Where the Streets Have No Name”.  Police stopped the film shoot when it began to attract a crowd of thousands.
  • In 1991, New Kids on the Block’s Donnie Wahlberg was arrested after setting fire to carpets at a hotel in Louisville.  He plea-bargained the charge down to criminal mischief.
  • Always ahead of the curve, in 2015, Willie Nelson announced that he and his family were creating a brand of marijuana called Willie’s Reserve.  He planned a chain of stores for his signature brand and other strains to be grown with strict quality control.
