LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An Encinitas middle school campus supervisor arrested this week on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 12-year old pleaded not-guilty yesterday.  21-year old Omar Hernandez Galeana had worked at Diegueno Middle School for three months.  He was fired by the school district following his arrest.  The DA’s office says there are at least two victims and the alleged offenses happened on March 23 and 24.  Galeana is being held without bail.  He’s the third staffer at a San Diego County school arrested in the past week. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/no-bail-for-encinitas-middle-school-staffer-accused-of-molesting-12-year-old

Wyld Jungle, a private venue near Galway Downs, east of Temecula that offers parties, events and tours featuring exotic animals is under scrutiny by PETA and Riverside County officials.  It’s operated by a social media figure with a checkered past, Michael Holston, who goes by the name “The Real Tarzann”.  A letter yesterday from attorneys for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to the USDA asked the agency to take “aggressive enforcement action” against Holston for breaking laws and “disregarding the suffering of animals he treats as props.”  The letter says every video Holston has posted on social media is “riddled with Animal Welfare Act violations.”  Previous charges in Florida charging Holston with selling wildlife without a license make him ineligible for an AWA exhibitor license.  Holston has yet to comment on this week’s allegations.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/no-bail-for-encinitas-middle-school-staffer-accused-of-molesting-12-year-old

The Fallbrook Union Elementary School District has announced its designation as a California Purple Star School District in recognition of its commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families with critical support services.  Every school within the district applied for and was awarded the prestigious Purple Star designation.  FUESD is one of the pioneering districts nationwide to achieve the feat. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/03/28/news/fuesd-honored-as-purple-star-district-for-dedication-to-military-families/75720.html

The cities of San Marcos and Encinitas are each considering asking for a sales tax increase on the November ballot.  Encinitas wants to fund infrastructure improvements.  San Marcos just wants to balance its budget. https://voiceofsandiego.org/2024/03/27/north-county-report-san-marcos-encinitas-consider-sales-tax-measures/

As we prepare for what forecasters say will be a major storm this weekend in Southern California, it’s a good time to review the rain totals so far since our rainy season officially ends Sunday.  As of now, the state has received 104% of its usual rainfall.  The mountain snowpack is at 101% of normal.  And the state’s reservoirs are at 116% of normal thanks to a much wetter than average year last year when the snowpack reached an historic high.  This year has been warmer than last year and will probably continue to be, so the snowpack will probably melt more quickly than last year.  Two wet years in a row are good news for abating drought.  UCLA climate scientists say anything around average may or may not be normal since we’re living “in an era where ‘average’ is not an accurate a descriptor of what happens most of the time.”  Some local conditions have been even more extreme this year.  LA is at 140% of its normal rainfall after getting one of the wettest storm systems on record this winter.  And a system as strong as the one coming this weekend this late in the season is very unusual.  Blame it on El Niño.

Weather in Pala will be mostly sunny but cool today and tomorrow.  Rain beginning tomorrow night, heaviest Saturday becoming sporadic with possible thunderstorms Sunday.  Up to 2 ½ total inches in Pala.  Up to 4 inches in the mountains.  With the ground still damp, flooding is a strong possibility. A foot or two of snow above 7k feet.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NBA – The Clippers edged the 76ers in Philadelphia 108-107 last night. In that game, refs admit they missed a foul call on the final play.  The Lakers beat the Grizzlies in Memphis 136-124.  The Knicks beat the Raptors in Toronto 145-101, eliminating Toronto from the playoff race.  And the Spurs beat the Jazz in Salt Lake City 118-111, eliminating Utah.  Other winners last night were Charlotte, Golden State, Atlanta, Chicago, Minnesota, Phoenix, Brooklyn and Houston with the last two both going to overtime.  Just two games tonight – Boston at Atlanta and Milwaukee at New Orleans. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39824611/crew-chief-admits-missed-foul-76ers-final-drive-loss-clippers

In college basketball – Yesterday in the NIT quarterfinals, Seton Hall routed UNLV 91-68 and Utah topped VCU 74-54.  The semifinals are Tuesday.  Seattle won the CBI championship game 77-67 over High Point.  And Norfolk State won the CIT championship game over Purdue Fort Wayne.

The NCAA Sweet 16 round begins today including San Diego State’s game against #1 seed Connecticut at 4:30p on TBS.  Also, Clemson against Arizona at 4p and Alabama against North Carolina at 6:30p on CBS.  And Illinois against Iowa State at 7p on TBS.  The other eight teams play tomorrow.

NCAA President Charlie Baker issued a statement yesterday calling on states to prohibit prop betting on college games.  He says legal sports gambling increases stress on college players.  Prop betting is wagering on individual stats rather than the outcome of the game.  Some players have been harassed by prop bettors for failing to make them money.  Such bets are only fully legal in four states and the District of Columbia.

In Major League Baseball – No games yesterday.  Other than last week’s two games in South Korea, the regular season opened today.  It began at noon with the Angels in Baltimore.  San Diego hosts San Francisco and the Dodgers host the Cardinals at 1p.  Ten other games as well.  Scheduled games in New York and Philadelphia are being postponed due to rain in the forecast.

Thanks to all that deferred salary for Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers still have money to spend.  They’ve agreed to a ten-year $140m contract extension for catcher Will Smith.  He turns 29 tomorrow and was due for free agency in 2025. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39821532/sources-dodgers-smith-close-10-year-140m-deal

In the NHL – Ottawa swamped Buffalo 6-2.  And Tampa Bay beaned first-place Boston 3-1.  Fourteen games tonight including the Kings at Edmonton and the already-eliminated Ducks at Seattle.

Washington Capitals and NBA Wizards owner Ted Leonsis and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a letter of intent yesterday to keep both teams in the District of Columbia through 2050 thanks to a half-billion dollars’ worth of improvements to the city’s Capital One Arena, including taking over nearby Gallery Place for an additional 200k square feet of space, the creation of an entertainment district in the Chinatown neighborhood, and safety and transportation upgrades.  That ends talk of moving the teams to a new arena in Virginia. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/39821997/talks-move-forward-lure-wizards-capitals-virginia

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were fairly flat.  The Dow was down a small fraction.  The S&P 500 was up an equally small fraction.  The NASDAQ was down a little over a tenth of a percent.  Gold traded $26.20 an ounce higher on the Comex at $2,238.90.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.42 at $82.77 a barrel.

In one of the longest sentences ever given for financial fraud, former head of crypto exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried got 25 years in prison this morning.  Judge Lewis Kaplan agreed with prosecutors that Bankman-Fried committed his crimes because he wanted to be a hugely politically influential person.  That jail term could be cut in half under the 2018 prison reform law known as the First Step Act, which was primarily created as a civil rights measure for minority offenders convicted of non-violent drug-trafficking.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/28/business/ftx-sam-bankman-fried-sentencing/index.html

Looking for an edge in the AI technology arms race, Amazon yesterday said it would spend another $2.75b in support of Anthropic on top of its original $1.25b investment.  It’s Amazon’s largest outside investment ever.  The company’s previous biggest venture bet was $1.3b for EV maker Rivian.  Anthropic’s Claude competes with OpenAI and ChatGPT and will use Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud provider.  They’ll also use Amazon-designed chips that may eventually compete with Nvidia.  Google is also a multi-billion-dollar backer of Anthropic with its own deal for Google Cloud.  The AI startup is now valued at $29b in a field that has exploded with over $29b invested across nearly 700 AI deals over the past year.  Some of this spending spree is coming under fire as circular accounting with investments coming back as cloud revenue, “juicing” the books of the company contributing the cash, which can mislead investors.  The Federal Trade Commission is taking a look for so-called “round tripping”.  https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/27/amazon-spends-2point7b-on-startup-anthropic-in-largest-venture-investment.html

Local retail gasoline prices are about flat although at their highest level since Thanksgiving heading into this holiday weekend.  The average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $5.04, same as yesterday, but a nickel more than one week ago and 20 cents more than a month ago.  Trends are similar nationwide with today’s average at $3.53.  Riverside County is down a penny today at $4.93.  Today’s lowest local price is $4.46 at the Mohsen station on Mission at Carolyn Circle in Oceanside.  Horizon Fuel in Valley Center is $4.49.  The lowest southwest Riverside County price is $4.59 at Murrieta Sam’s Club.  It’s $4.38 at the Super 8 on N. State St. in Hemet. https://www.riversidegasprices.com/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The New York Times today noted that while President Biden’s disapproval rating at this point in his term of office is the worst of any U.S. president since World War II, it’s actually better than most of his international peers.  And many of them are up for re-election this year too.  In addition to local problems, there are four international issues driving the public’s anger with its leaders – inflation, immigration, inequality and incumbency.  Rising prices always anger voters.  Current inflation has been driven by the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with European countries being even more directly affected.  While immigration can be good for growing economies and reducing inflation, it uses up government resources, changes a country’s culture, and when illegal, contributes to a sense of lawlessness and chaos.  With at least the appearance of the rich getting richer thanks to major corporate CEOs amassing more wealth than some countries, inequality creates a distrust of the elite, including national leaders.  And finally, incumbent politicians typically have an electoral advantage over challengers.  But that advantage diminishes over time.  For example, two-term U.S. presidents are rarely succeeded by a president from the same party.  This partially explains some of the popular dissatisfaction with both the anticipated candidates for this November’s election since both are single-term incumbents.  Many other world leaders have been in power for much longer.  Leaders or parties in France, Canada, and the UK have ruled for between 7 and 14 years.  Japan’s top party has led almost continuously since World War II.  Dissatisfaction among the electorate of more than half the world’s population could manifest itself at the ballot box this year.   www.morningbrew.com

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi (SHAU-mee) today unveiled its new high-line all-electric car, the Speed Ultra 7 sedan in Beijing.  The company CEO says it’s designed to compete with Porsche and Tesla in the luxury/performance EV market.  Prices will range from just under $30k to about $41.5k – less than half the price of its intended competition.  It comes at a time of overall intense competition in the Chinese EV market – the world’s largest.  There are currently more than 200 major manufacturers of pure EVs and plug-in hybrids.  Price wars have erupted to boost sales in the face of weak consumer demand.  Xiaomi, better known for consumer electronics, accounted for 13% of all global and Chinese smartphone sales in the 4th quarter of last year.  Three years ago, they announced they would invest $10b over the next decade in their EV subsidiary.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/28/business/chinas-xiaomi-ev-launch-intl-hnk/index.html
